In 2016, DJ, producer and member of Genome 6.66MBP Tess Sun, aka Hyph11e, began work on her debut EP.

Living a double life as a composer for TV by day, and DJing around Shanghai by night, the passing of time often stifled and spurred on her production process. After having a dream of a Vanishing Cinema, a place where memories disappear in front of your eyes through the passage of time, Hyph11e quit her day job to focus on her own music full-time. The result is four original, uncompromising tracks that owe as much to vintage noise and industrial music as they do to field recordings and contemporary club music.

On the remixes, Tzusing tweaks and tunes “Black Pepper”, driving it into idiosyncratically ominous territory; M.E.S.H. rebuilds “Unknown Number” from the ground up until it reaches the clouds; while Kid Antoine takes “Escapism”s warning sirens and cuts them into playful, bouncing cascades.

Silk is an attempt at communicating a subtle reaction to the sound of 'clubs' and what is (generally) considered entertaining.

Birthed in a tumultuous environment, pragmatic undertones circumvent the normal
genre tropes to create a new ethos. A sound for those forgotten by the glitz and glam of
contemporary music culture; for those who feel despair in the removed bliss that
permeates the world around them.

Gobstopper alumni Loom returns to the label for his third outing since debuting with ‘Grade’ back in 2014. 

Now a founding member of club collective and party, Acid Fantasy — a popular club night he has helped run for the past year alongside Akito and Nervous Horizon duo TSVI and Wallwork — Loom’s palette has continued to expand and evolve, as evidenced by sparkling new record, ‘London Ambient’. 

Where ‘Grade’ and 2016 follow-up ‘European Heartache’ functioned around experimental grime tropes and fractious melody, ‘London Ambient’ unfurls broader, complex landscapes and sounds, inspired by discovering ‘so much new music’ working in London record shops over the last two years. “I’ve been introduced to so much new stuff, music I never would have heard before”, Loom explains, “…and these new influences gave me loads more drive to start making music”. 

Written with a wide-eyed sense of discovery, ‘London Ambient’ flexes between futuristic, sci-fi soundscapes (‘Heavy Glow’), sprawling acid-y club trips (‘Aacccid’) and sub-heavy, rave breaks (‘Saturday Job At Laser Quest’). These myriad sounds, bookended by the lush ‘Heavy Glow’ and dreamy, bubbling soundscape, ‘Forever’, compound Loom’s new-found sense of discovery — a fitting motif for a label that continues to grow and re-mould with every release.

The latest release on Tobago Tracks sees Berlin-based producer Alobhe deliver four blistering cuts of forward thinking club music.

State Space encapsulates the paranoia and angst felt in an increasingly polarised world, typified by feelings of helplessness. The EP spans four sonically diverse pieces, opening with ‘State Space Conversion’, which introduces Alobhe’s visceral and direct aesthetic.

While ostensibly lo-fi, tracks such as ‘Numb’ and ‘Reload’ contain elements of progressive experimentation that challenge the perception of conventional lo-fi hardware based club music.

Numb’s nauseating warped sample over a solemn distorted electric guitar dirge epitomises the lack of agency felt whilst voyeuristically consuming the spectacle of the modern world. These themes are continued in ‘Reload’, where out of sync drums and lead loosely give the track shape, implode briefly, and then reassert themselves, further adding to this sense of unease.

With an enigmatic online presence and little to go by outside of her moniker, Alobhe has created a jarring fusion of electro, black metal, techno and sample based experimentation.

A pillar of Bristol's ultra-fertile bass music community, Pinch has been turning out speaker-rattling rhythms since the early days of dubstep. Although his more recent output – along with that of his labels, Tectonic and Cold Recordings – has focused on more hybridized technoid sounds, his new 'Brain Scan' EP finds him revisiting the classic dubstep template. The record is slated to arrive on November 17 via Australian label Aquatic Lab, but we were given the chance to debut the thumping "Street Light" on Red Bull Radio's First Floor, our weekly look at what's new in electronic music.
