With Assembler, his second full-length album, Yen Tech re emerges in ecstatic and primordial new form -- a multi-layered and interwoven work that blends futuristic production, meta-science fiction, and anthropic critique into a dizzying array of next scenarios -- a maze-like vision of our technological and exponentially oracular, full-stack future.

This imagined future becomes a construct or place in itself; one in which the record buzzes and swarms; a mechanosphere of towering melodic vocal samples and sound design - all narrated by Yen Tech's unnerving, diaristic vocals - as he channels the form of post-human techno cretin, whispering hyperbolic ASMR to no one in particular. We follow this character from one disorienting experience to the next as he recites a stream of indecipherable neologisms and hyper-descriptives, the existential residue seeping from every line. In the end though, a strange, uneasy beauty comes into focus; the metamorphic lyrics and musical euphorias revealing Assembler as a type of elegy: a wet glass reflection of the failures of what we are and were - and a jubilant celebration of what we may become.

"I imagined Assembler as a type of self imposed simulation, an invisible boundary that the narrator has to navigate out of to move forward. It was a way of looking at how we may carry the issues and failures of the past with us into the future. The psychological baggage of history, the guilt of geotrauma, the addictive melange of technology all become dealt with in this stage of acceptance and recovery. I wrote the album with this in mind, a process to find the slimy pearl of who we are" - Yen Tech

Having spent the latter half of 2020 pushing out a string of intense bootlegs via SoundCloud and taking up remix duties for acts like Ice_Eyes, São Paulo’s Xiao Quan is readying some original productions for his debut release on Infinite Machine, entitled A Taste of Revenge. These frantic, drum-heavy compositions see the artist push further into a liminal space where techno and hybrid club sounds blend - and continues a stylized nod to Xiao Quan’s muse, The Crying Freeman manga series.

The record opens with Chakram Intel Bulletins; one of the EP’s more measured moments but one that remains as tense and claustrophobic as the rest of Taste of Revenge. The layers of crunching analogue synthesis and the deluge of drum hits which seem to trip over each other are hypnotic; creating strange and disorienting effects on the ear. The end result has more than an air of the cyberpunk about it - as if Vatican Shadow tried his hand re-soundtracking Ghost In The Shell.

Xiao Quan notches up the dread and suspense on the following title track of the EP. Airy sustained tones and an unrelenting mass of polyrhythms push up against each other, vying for your attention before a piercing 2-tone melody cuts through the mix like a hot knife through butter.

With the next track, Shades of Death, the creeping suspense and claustrophobia of the previous two compositions is swapped out for unadulterated rhythmic chaos. Underpinned by an oscillating bass pulse, countless samples and drum lines are arranged in a frenetic audio-collage. A solid showcase of Xiao Quan’s skillful combining of sounds from across the globe.

The EP rounds off with The Crying Freeman, a track named after the manga that underpins many elements of the Xiao Quan project. The most melodic production of the release, the track’s mournful synth line glides over rushing, mechanistic drum patterns. This blend of the emotional and the machinic distinctly mirrors the situation of the manga’s protagonist; an assassin hypnotically programmed to kill on his master’s demand who sheds tears at the fate of his victims.

Even a passing glance at panels of The Crying Freeman manga clearly shows that Xiao Quan has done his homework on his source material. The producer masterfully channels the uneasy and shadowy world of the manga series and translates it into the sonic experience that is A Taste of Revenge EP.

A regular at Seoul’s ‘Cakeshop’ and member of LGBTQ collective Shade Seoul, NET GALA’s SVBKVLT debut is named after Shinpageuk (신파극), a form of theatre from 20th century Korea. In contemporary context, Shinpa is a synonym for ‘tears and overwhelming emotions,’ but when it was first introduced to Korea, Shinpa was used to express progressive political views, cover social issues, and later the melodramatic domestic tragedies. There is a vast gap between the past and current context of Shinpa, and as such there has been a lot of mistranslation or misconception between the two.

After their first EP [re:FLEX*ion] (NBDKNW – 2019) - , NET GALA spent time researching Shinpa, finding parallels between the work they were making and the traditional theater style. The emotional, dramatic nature of Shinpa echoed the exaggerated affection of ‘pop’ – in which NET GALA searches for the impact on one’s own narrative and emotion. The ‘mistranslation’ applied to the terms history is reflected in the changing course between the two EPs – how one can reinterpret or warp one ‘lost’ cultural concept into another.

From the stretched-out ‘The Ha Dance’ sample combined with traditional Korean percussion and 808s on ‘Shpiral’, to the sample of a Korean lesbian protester struggling to claim her existence through the blasting drums on Dodomzit, ‘신파 SHINPA’ is NET GALA’s interpretation of the Shinpageuk. The EP is packaged with remixes from Amazondotcom, ZULI and Menzi further reinterpreting the original work.

MIRA 新伝統 @mira-shindento is the project of multidisciplinary artists Honami Higuchi and Raphael Leray. They have been working on otherness and post-capitalocene thematics. CLMxGUN is happy to present Chain of Whispers, a two-fold EP exploring further collaborative production processes. Like a murmur in the wind, a secret being delivered from ear to ear, it is born from a playful approach to sound manipulation and its transformation when passed from one hand to another. An embodiment of how music can be altered by each and every contribution.

Through a defined set of constraints based on the Telephone game, the concept is simple : each successive track is a remix of the previous one, and the contributors could not hear what was done before them. So on and so forth. A continuous cycle of appropriation and re-interpretation.

From this experiment resulted two 7-track EPs, two chains which gathered 11 artists, each with their own identity and their own input. With each new link in the chain, the sound mutates, speeds up or slows down - some of its elements are exacerbated, while others are concealed or juxtaposed to new ones. 

The first chain welcomes Désiré, HeedLess, indigoblue, Lithe, migu, and SNKLS. It starts from soothing bells and angelic voices to end up with rhythmic patterns and sharp impacts. A journey through a collective world with its own soundscapes and wonders.
