A regular at Seoul’s ‘Cakeshop’ and member of LGBTQ collective Shade Seoul, NET GALA’s SVBKVLT debut is named after Shinpageuk (신파극), a form of theatre from 20th century Korea. In contemporary context, Shinpa is a synonym for ‘tears and overwhelming emotions,’ but when it was first introduced to Korea, Shinpa was used to express progressive political views, cover social issues, and later the melodramatic domestic tragedies. There is a vast gap between the past and current context of Shinpa, and as such there has been a lot of mistranslation or misconception between the two.

After their first EP [re:FLEX*ion] (NBDKNW – 2019) - , NET GALA spent time researching Shinpa, finding parallels between the work they were making and the traditional theater style. The emotional, dramatic nature of Shinpa echoed the exaggerated affection of ‘pop’ – in which NET GALA searches for the impact on one’s own narrative and emotion. The ‘mistranslation’ applied to the terms history is reflected in the changing course between the two EPs – how one can reinterpret or warp one ‘lost’ cultural concept into another.

From the stretched-out ‘The Ha Dance’ sample combined with traditional Korean percussion and 808s on ‘Shpiral’, to the sample of a Korean lesbian protester struggling to claim her existence through the blasting drums on Dodomzit, ‘신파 SHINPA’ is NET GALA’s interpretation of the Shinpageuk. The EP is packaged with remixes from Amazondotcom, ZULI and Menzi further reinterpreting the original work.

As we enter into the 2018th Sequence of the modern earth time, so too does the Nostro Hood System advance forward, the system itself generating a gravitational pull marginally similar to that of the solar system nestled against it. Within the vast confines of the Nostro Hood, a vessel floats proudly – a beacon for the myriad of living spheres that surround it from every angle. The Waystation; a point of congregation for unimaginable beings who seek refuge, resources or even knowledge regarding the various species that occupy nearby worlds. 

At this time, at the beginning of a new year, the vessel lends its halls to the beings of the Nostro Hood. A celebration to the glowing star that lights the terrain for so many beings as it ages yet another lifetime. Providing the aural selections for this momentous occasion are ten artists, each hailing from their own homeworld, each offering a piece of auditory culture to represent the people of their planet. This multicultural experience truly defines the nature of the Nostro Hood – a celebration of difference both sonically and culturally.

Following up his remixes of STILL’s ‘I’ album cuts in 2018, Don Zilla bares his teef in both parts of ‘From The Cave to the World’, first churning up a viscous groove full of shadow-boxing drums and gutter bass distortion on the cusp of dubstep rave and halfstep D&B with ‘From The Cave’, before opening up a stargate like portal in his studio with 12 minutes of plunging beatless depth and unheimlich terra forming in ‘Inside Me’, and in a way recalling early Emptyset or stare-out Prurient piece.

We are back with another single from Beijing-based bass music producer Negative808.

About the track: 

Jacking swing is an improvisation using hardware synthesizer based originally on a Techno frame.  Further experimenting at a tempo of 140 bpm while adding Bass music elements to the created rhythm, such a damn swing tune came out, which brings you straight back to the old good rave time. 

About Negative808:

Negative808 is a Beijing bass producer who hails from the southern Chinese province of Fujian. He has had several singles released on the Beijing based electronic label Ran Music. Since living in the capital he has integrated various upbeat electronic dance styles into his work; such as Drum & Bass, Grime, Footwork and Juke. On many occasions he has taken part in events thrown by one of China’s most respected Bass DJ collectives, Syndicate and the S!LK Crew. 

In addition to being an avant-garde creator, Negative808 is also a behind the scenes promoter and supporter of the Chinese electronic music community. Along with fellow producer, EZZZ, he is a founding member of the online electronic music media platform, FREQ. Negative808 is well known to the young electronic musicians in China as a regular contributor to the music technology review platform Midifan. Aside from being a producer, Negative808 is also an active DJ in the Beijing underground scene. He consistently presents workshops on Ableton Live and electronic music production in conjunction with Floso x Ran Music.
