Facilitating post-pandemic multi-disciplinary symbiosis, Sonia Calico-led SYNERGY FESTIVAL invites rapper SOWUT and UK Dance music producer B E N N let go of old selves and go down the rabbit hole with an unprecedented collaboration track, “ALL RED”.

SYNERGY FESTIVAL, Taiwan’s first large-scale digital art and music festival since the epidemic, forges new bonds between the underground and the mainstream in order to develop a new paradigm within Taiwan’s music scene. Among the eight special projects developed through the Synergy Triangle stages, Rapper SOWUT and producer B E N N might be the furthest apart in style. Even so, the two produced the track “ALL RED”, born from the collaborative spirit of SYNERGY FESTIVAL and respect of rave culture. SOWUT’s label NXWV and the SYNERGY FESTIVAL team were so impressed by the track, rushed to release it separately as a special single. 

SOWUT’s lyrics on “ ALL RED '' ponder the curatorial focus of SYNERGY FESTIVAL, the bridge between “the virtual and the real ''. He takes the red pill, liberating himself from the bonds of reality, following the white rabbit into a realm of infinite possibilities. The producer, B E N N, schooled in the bass subculture in London, extracts the rumble of classic UK Dubstep and imbues it with African-inspired rhythms. The result of their partnership channels the future urbanism of the seminal Hyperdub release of Kode9 & The Spaceape. Though this is SOWUT’s first venture working with such a dark genre of electronic music, he surpasses even his own expectations on '' ALL RED '', opening up new possibilities in the concept of Taiwan Grime. 

“ALL RED” will be released as a single on March 10th, and will be accompanied by a full live audio/visual performance exclusive to SYNERGY FESTIVAL. The Live A/V will be handled by the Digital Art collective XTRUX, who will use the latest game engine technology to build a fully realized world  for “ALL RED” to inhabit. This will be presented on a 9-meter wide LED wall, paired with the world-class Funktion-One sound system. Through this stage, and the other special collaborations, SYNERGY FESTIVALl hopes to transcend beyond a simple rave, art performance, concert, or party. But rather, a new imagining of what an experience can be. This is SYNERGY FESTIVAL.

Inspired by the iconic tradition of the sample pack, the Source Folder series seeks to explore the diversity of interpretations, paths and offsprings that might emerge from a common resource. In each installment, a member of the Global URL Nation provides a sample pack from which other artists are invited to create a new track. 

To initiate the series, we are honored to welcome SNKLS, a French producer blending rich sound designs, intricate drum patterns and synthetic curiosities into unique entities at the crossroads of genres and labels. 

For his participation, he curated not one, but two packs of sounds, made from a selection of Eurorack modules such as Rings, Morphagene or DPO, providing a set of tools, materials and supplies for others to appropriate, upcycle, reuse and combine in order to create their own item. 

The 160 Pack edition gathers Ancestral Vision, Atrice, B E N N, DJ Body Double, dragongirl, El Murki, Lia Catreux, Orqualyzer, RougeHotel, SNKLS, Talita Otović, & VIBRISSE. Bass-heavy club cuts, broken drum patterns and sharp textures deliver a crushing discharge of energy, an eruption of invigorating fluids that seems to emerge from the darkest depths of the underground.

Inspirado en el grime y dubstep británicos tempranos, lanzó tres EPs centrados en la música bass en 2014, 2017 y 2023 en los sellos Rankadank, Push & Pull y Gully Riddim respectivamente. También ha participado en varios lanzamientos de sellos como Dohits, Genome 6.66 Mbp, CVLT, OOFB, Sea Cucumber, Functionlab, S!LK y Yeti Out. Después de un período tranquilo, ZEAN regresa con su cuarto EP en solitario, "No Roots", bajo el sello Gully Riddim. Estas pistas fueron producidas durante la pandemia y son notablemente diferentes a su trabajo anterior. Utiliza una atmósfera sombría y ritmos fragmentados e impredecibles, combinados con diversas muestras de sonido distorsionadas y sobrecargadas de humanos y animales, intentando diversificar su sonido y liberarse de su enfoque creativo estereotipado y fijo. Esto también es una forma de autocrítica contra esta tierra culturalmente estéril. El EP incluye cinco pistas de ZEAN, junto con dos remixes, uno del productor argentino Jaiiu y otro del productor sudafricano Jumping Back Slash. Ambos remixes reducen los sonidos experimentales de los originales, simplifican el ritmo de la canción y los cambios estructurales, haciéndolos más aptos para la pista de baile.

ZEAN, based in Shanghai, is an independent music producer and DJ. After a quiet period, ZEAN returns with his fourth solo EP, "No Roots" on Gully Riddim. These tracks were produced during the pandemic and are distinctly different from his earlier work. He uses a sombre atmosphere and fragmented, unpredictable rhythms, combined with various distorted and overloaded sound samples of both humans and animals, attempting to diversify his sound and break free from his own stereotypical and fixed creative approach. This is also a form of self-criticism against this culturally barren land. The EP includes five of ZEAN's tracks, along with two remixes, one by Argentinian producer Jaiiu and another by South African producer Jumping Back Slash. Both remixes reduce the experimental sounds of the originals, simplifying the song's rhythm and structural changes, and making them more friendly for the dance floor.

In May, halle o’malley, a producer who’s released on Vief a bunch of times by now, got in touch with an idea. She’d come across the Instagram of a 17-year-old Palestinian musician called Samih, who’s life has been torn apart by Israel's recent onslaught on the Gaza strip. Their home destroyed, Samih and his family were forced to flee to a refugee camp in Rafah. A Middle East Monitor article from June stated that him and his family have been displaced 5 times since 7th October. During their displacement, Samih has gone viral posting videos of himself singing and playing a borrowed oud, an instrument that loosely resembles a guitar.

Having spoken to Samih and received his blessing, Halle planned to sample a video of his and donate the proceeds from the sales of that track to a GoFundMe set up for him and his family. Halle approached me with the idea of scaling this project up by inviting other producers to sample Samih themselves or provide original tracks of their own.
 
Madhoun now stands as a compilation containing four productions sampling Samih, an interlude, and nine other dance tracks generously donated by producers from across the world.
