Unheimlich –
When mismatching modes of intelligence, cognition and communication confront one another.

As Mark Fisher writes in The Weird and The Eerie, it’s not a simple case of 'enjoy[ing] what scares us'. Rather, ‘it has … to do with a fascination for the outside, for that which lies beyond standard perception, cognition and experience', an affect that involves terror and distress, but isn’t wholly described by them. 

Freud's believed that what we find the most eerie or scary originates not from the exotic or foreign, but from what was originally familiar then repressed and subsequently remanifested in an uncanny/ unheimlich guise.

It is not often that we come by experiences that threaten to disturb these patterns. Given the choice, most of us would deliberately avoid them. ‘It makes sense’, writes Freud, that ‘repetition, the re-encountering of identity [or sameness], is itself a source of pleasure’ — for pleasure, as Fisher helpfully glosses, ‘alway[s] refer[s] to previous forms of satisfaction’ — it is defined by familiarity. But what if this situation were inverted — the heterogeneity and diversity that can be sustained by rhythm preceding the necessary homogeneity of the tempo? What if objects didn’t work how you expected them to? What if the framing logic of time and space was different? What if the beat was … eerie?

Special Guest Octonomy

It was great to have Octonomy in the studio with us. She performed a live-set with few of her new tracks from her recent album Warhorse.

Octonomy spans multiple genres; harsh noise to darkwave to industrial and techno. She uses found sounds, field recordings, voice, power tools, samples, noise, reverb and distortion sequenced through hardware synthesizers to create pulsing, rhythmic soundscapes.

In addition to her sound design, songwriting and DJ work as Octonomy, she has done a number of commissioned sound pieces and longform ambient compositions for experiential spaces, performances and immersive installations, and has incorporated her soundscapes by way of utilizing various different responsive software and hardware-based technologies.

This time we have False Witness aka Marco Gomez made a special mix CSS065 before he resides in Berlin. We asked him a few questions we have been discussing lately in the studio. We thought the idea of “creating a soundscape for listeners and dancers to reflect on instead of taking them on a journey” is very interesting to us as performers and creatives in general.

October Live

Cultivated Sound Session is back with a new set by Arthur Kimskii. We are very inspired by the stories he shared with us in this interview, Arthur has been an important figure from the underground techno reality in the US. He lived in NYC from 2002 till 2013 and then went to Berlin and worked at the Recordloft together with Jon Hester, Dj Richard, and Hinode. Arthur gave Answer Code Request his L.A.G. record with Cory James while he was working at Recordloft. Answer Code Request ended up playing “Hippie” at Berghain, Berlin was very exciting at that time for him and many friends and artists. We are humbled and happy to introduce CSS066.
