DJ Laurel – Play My Music EP (HOTDIGITS115)

DJ Laurel marks his maiden voyage with Hot Digits Music with a four track, slow-motion groove-a-thon that tips a wink to the summer and happier times…

This sumptuous slow-mo ride starts with the title track ‘Play My Music’ – a soulful, 105bpm warm embrace that wraps around you and promises to never let go. The deft touches of rhythm guitar, roving bassline, brass and piano are second only to the soaring vocal which provides the heart and soul of the track. 

Track 2 is the aptly titled ‘That’s What Time It Is’, apt because you’ll know exactly what time it is when this outrageously filthy piano led stomper grabs you by the collar. Some nice and subtle gospel vibes can be detected here, but the main attraction is the irresistible urge to join this peaceful march through blues riffs, organ solos and those furiously catchy piano chords. A call to arms, some might say. 

Up next is ‘Street Tough’. DJ Laurel proves yet again that the downtempo vibe is not only alive and kicking but heaving like a crowded beach bar offering free beer. The kind of swishy, sultry groove that DJ Laurel has become almost synonymous with, this rolls perfectly along in its own ethereal vapour. You’ll never get tired of the sassy vocal. It’ll stay in your head forever, accompanied by the sax solo. If you’re not waking up every morning singing ‘Street Tough’ then we have failed. 

Lastly is the Fingerman Re-edit of ‘Play My Music’. The Hot Digits head honcho rolls back the years for this one and gets his best scalpels and synths out to lay down a seriously sexy and funky number. This solid 105bpm chugger has it all – glorious piano, bongos galore, driving bass, Rogers-esque guitar and that infectious, soul piercing vocal (with an added delightful twist).  A tune that has one eye on the summer and one toe in the pool – it’s on.

DJ Laurel’s ‘Play My Music’ EP is up there with the best downtempo goodness on Hot Digits – a carefully crafted, masterfully produced EP which is sure to be regarded as a classic in years to come.

DJ Laurel – Love Games EP

The ever-fresh DJ Laurel squeezes the last pips out of the summer with the marvellous ‘Love Games’ EP on Hot Digits Music.

The title track ‘Love Games’ is, quite simply, a feel-good mid-tempo treat. An early doors crowd pleaser, ‘Love Games’ contains all the bits and pieces that DJ Laurel excels at putting together. A super-confident four x four beat sets the tone, but we’re all here for the perfectly set vocals that soak you right through.

The slow and dreamy chugger that is ‘Back To You’ occupies the ambient lit space between velvet-walled late night lounge and daytime disco. Once again, DJ Laurel showcases his immaculate taste and deft skill in riffing on classics. Can you wear your loafers on the dance floor? Absolutely.

The tempo shits upwards for ‘Love On A Summer Night’. There’s a cheeky George Benson vibe in the air with this sublime rework of a 1982 R&B classic. A track that celebrates the good times and those sliding door moments, it sweeps you up on a warm summer breeze and leaves you lying on your back under a star-filled sky. Let the lyrics drip over your ears like honey and embrace their gentle touch.

DJ Laurel knows how to hit those sweet spots, and with the ‘Love Games’ EP you will find it exceptionally difficult to pick out a favourite. A timeless and gorgeous collection of tunes which closes out the summer months perfectly.
