Survivors frequently encounter skepticism when they come forward, which can lead to feelings of shame and self-doubt. Politicians and decision-makers, who hold significant power in shaping laws and policies, often overlook the harsh realities of sexual violence, prioritizing political agendas over the urgent needs of those affected. This oversight can perpetuate a culture of silence and stigma, further alienate survivors and hinder their access to justice and support. Documentaries such as The Invisible War, Justice Denied, and The Hunting Ground serve as critical resources that highlight the pervasive issues surrounding sexual violence, including systemic failures within institutions like the military and educational systems. These films aim to shed light on the struggles faced by survivors and the often-inadequate responses from those in positions of authority. Despite the powerful narratives presented in these documentaries, the public response remains lackluster, indicating a disconnect between awareness and action.

We must demand accountability from systems that ignore the harsh realities faced by survivors, advocating for a shift in both policy and public perception. Taking action means reshaping conversations around sexual violence to support comprehensive policies that prioritize survivors' rights and well-being. This involves not only listening to survivors’ stories but also amplifying their voices in discussions that affect their lives. The Unseen Battle: How Trauma Haunts Survivors in a World That Ignores Them

Navigating the aftermath of sexual assault can feel overwhelming for many survivors. It's not just the physical act that causes pain; it's the emotional wounds that linger, sometimes for years. Survivors often face a dual burden: the trauma of what happened and the financial strain of therapy, which becomes essential for healing. Many, like myself, are left questioning why we must pay for healing when we did not choose to be victims in the first place.

The Deep Wounds of Trauma

The need for therapy arises not only from the act of violence itself but also from the complex emotions that follow, creating a multifaceted psychological landscape that can be incredibly difficult to navigate. Survivors of violence, particularly sexual assault, often grapple with a myriad of intense feelings, including guilt, shame, anger, and confusion. These emotions can be compounded by societal attitudes that frequently place blame on the victim rather than the perpetrator. Such societal narratives can lead to a toxic environment where survivors feel pressured to remain silent, further exacerbating their emotional turmoil. Research indicates that approximately 70% of sexual assault survivors experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), making professional help not just beneficial, but critical for recovery and healing. The psychological impact of trauma can manifest in various ways, including flashbacks, anxiety, depression, and difficulty in establishing trust, all of which underscore the importance of seeking therapeutic support.

For instance, a survivor might find themselves replaying the event in their mind repeatedly, caught in a loop of 'what if' scenarios, wondering if different choices could have altered the outcome. This obsessive rumination can lead to profound self-doubt and feelings of helplessness, complicating the healing process significantly. The internal dialogue may be harsh, with the survivor questioning their actions and decisions during the incident, which can create an overwhelming sense of responsibility for the violence inflicted upon them. Such thoughts can be debilitating, leading to a sense of isolation and despair. A supportive environment that validates their feelings and experiences is crucial for fostering recovery; it can help survivors feel understood and less alone in their struggles. Missing the innocent girl I was
Miss the trusting girl I was
I miss the girl who chased her dream to serve
her country
Thinking that the six guys and chain of command had
killed her,
Just go through the motions
Afraid to trust
Afraid to feel
Dissociate because that is what she was taught
Sometimes I have thought, “why did you not fight them and make them kill you, why did you just lay there, why did you not jump when you had the chance”
Sometimes I have wanted to get rid of this body, to hide this body
so that men would not look at me or hurt me again
But the belief it happened because of what I was wearing and that
I was too drunk came from society, not me.

It is time to unlearn everything that society has taught me,
Time to learn to feel, to stay present, to cry, to be angry, to laugh, to sing,
to dance, to dream, to tell my truth.
I am learning every day that there are more threads to me
That I have been rising and changing, rediscovering who I am
becoming who I want to be
putting the broken pieces back together and becoming an arrow
continuing to rise into the light.
Shining light on the things that I have never told anyone
letting go of old habits, old ways of doing things
I will become who I want to be and the world is going to hear me, ROAR!!

Some people don't know how to take Jules. She has a heart of gold. She is a Loyalist according to Ennegram. She is loyal to her family and friends. She speaks her truth. She is a champion who loves deeply. She is a warrior that on  a mission to heal. Also, she is not one that is to be vulnerable in others.
