For most of my life, I've been a fan of pop music.  I'm not someone who will stop liking a song just because its become popular or played a lot on the radio, nor am I someone who will stop like a artist or band just because their fanbase grows to include most people.  

However, I am drawn to novelty...and weirdness.  It is just as much in my DNA as my love of a great pop song.  

Sometimes, my efforts here with Interbay get pulled in one direction or the other.  Could be based on mood, the constant desire to never get settled, the not fall into traps or ruts.  Could also be just what's inspiring me at the moment of creation.  Or, in some cases, how I reinterpret partial ideas upon picking them up later, when other inspirations are in play.  

I guess what I'm saying is...if you've liked some of the poppier and straight forward dance tracks I've posted recently--THIS track might be a bit of a challenge.  It is noisy, it is chaotic, it is not bound by structure...  

...and yet, I hear structure in it.  I hear consistency.  I hear, for lack of a better word, some pop flavors in the mix.  It's just a noisier kind of pop, a more chaotic structural form.  

I mean--it's not pure noise, it's not no wave, it's not unmusical.  There's just a lot going on, including things that wouldn't get played on pop radio (if that even exists in 2024.)  

This is as much "Interbay" as any of the 142 SoundCloud Exclusive tracks that have come before it.  And, if you like Interbay--and I hope you do!--then you'll like this.

"Beat On Their Drums" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

It has been awhile since Interbay has let Blendersample mess with a track, and this is classic Blendersample--some rather old-school edits (some might say dodgy or even sloppy, but it's all in the pursuit of "even more fun."  

What we have here is a club house song with some thick, almost neuro, bass and saxophones slipping into some cheesy 70s disco pop samples (bonus Interbay points if you know where it's from without Googling!) and then there are stutters and needle drops, including some 80s house samples, and somehow it all ends with a hint of an absolutely classic early 90s new wave song?  

If you're not familiar with Interbay until this track (where have you been?  glad to have you on board, finally), you might be thinking "WTF?"--but this is, strangely, par for the course for Interbay...where every song can include anything and everything, including the kitchen sink.  

(Oh, previously undiagnosed adult ADHD is sometimes really fun!  But can also cause whiplash for people expecting their mutant pop dance music to more unidirectional--sorry, but not really sorry.)    

Giving this the Blendersample treatment really didn't change this track all that much, honestly...it was pretty all over the place even in its original form.  But, when you have to Nigel Tufnel yourself, it is nice to know that when Interbay is all the way up (all the way up) on ten, there's still that little bit more to push it over the top.  

As it is still windy (still dealing with the bomb cyclone) and gloomy here in Seattle, the home of Phantom Laboratories West and all things Interbay...I thought maybe something silly and fun could lift our spirits.  And what better to do that than a "Magic Nightlight"???  Hope you agree!

"Magic Nightlight (blendersample mix)"  *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Had to blow a LOT of dust off of THIS one.  It had been one of my longest unfinished projects, languishing in the back of The Vault...now, finally, brought to life.  

Originally, this was just a "proof of concept idea"--to see if I could come up with an interesting remix of a popular song from the 80s.  You might ask if the song chosen would be easily recognizable and to that I say "Yes, it is."  

I never finished it--I'm not sure how interested I am in producing bootleg "pure" remixes, in general.  On the other hand, sending Icarus up to see how high they can go, regardless of any concern for their safety...that IS something I'm definitely into.  

So, with that in mind, it felt like a job for Blendersample...and sure enough, there is some sampleriffic madness going on now...and, in case you've been living in a box, you could recognize some of the sources.  Yes, you could.  

There's a fun section that sounds like New Order (but it isn't.)  There's some breakbeat that sounds a llitle like Art of Noise (but it isn't.)  There are some female vocals that sound like they should be from something you've heard on the radio (they're not--they come from a royalty free sample pack.)  There are some sounds that definitely sound like a music box (they're not--that's the Obscurium synth.)  

This is a weird combination of pretty and gretty, of precision and blunt force.  In other words...it's classic Interbay.  

New tracks are being dropped every single day (so far!) so follow this page so you don't miss any...  I will never suggest that you'll love every single track posted here, but you'll never be bored!  

I only ask that you give this a listen.  If you like what you hear, give it a like.  You could also repost it, share it, comment on it, and/or put it on a playlist.  Those are all good things!  

If it intrigues you--there's a back catalog here that is closing in on 20 hours deep.  There are some slept on gems in there that could use some shine!

So, this is how Interbay parties.   

If I was still dj'ing, I might have thrown this into my NYE mix, depending on the crowd.  It certainly presents a shameless party vibe, ripe for celebration.  The original "Fun Baby" version ended with the fading out of the young men of the beach singing about the enjoyment they'll feel until their male parent removes access to the family vehicle--everything after that was added when it was decided that "Fun Baby (remix)" would be my New Year's Eve Interbay post.  

This is a feast for trainspotters and ex-record store employees.  There's so many different elements at play (with a healthy foundation of 80s, because...Interbay) and, again, this is a track that just makes me feel giddy when I hear it--and I can't wait for YOU to listen to it.   

BONUS INTERBAY POINTS...if you can pick out everything thrown into the blender to make this one happen... 
  
Thank you to everyone who has joined me on this crazy journey of posting never before heard Interbay tracks every single day (so far) in 2024.  I have a lot of plans for the new year, including digitizing music from my previous music making efforts, remixing Interbay experiments that posted previously on Facebook, and seeing how long I can keep this streak of consecutive days posting a track going (we're at 230 days and counting--including one that I took down because it wasn't good enough, and I'll remix and post that one again, I'm sure--and one that SoundCloud zapped (rest in peace, Icarus), though I did quickly replace that one with a reasonable alternative mix.)  

Yes, I'd love to have more listeners.  No, I'm not at a point where I necessarily deserve to have more.  And, unfortunately, no, I'm not in a position to hire anyone to help me with promotion or artwork.  (Though, perhaps someday--I'm working on it...making my mistakes in public and learning as I go along.)  

For now, it's enough that you're reading this...and that you're listening to Interbay.

If you were to say "This song rocks"--that would be very kind of you, thank you.
If you were to say "This song is about rocks"--that would be mostly accurate. 

So, if you have a crystal structure forming as part of a metamorphic rock, it is either an idioblast (which means the crystal still develops fully as a crystal, with crystal faces) or it is a xenoblast (which means the crystal doesn't have crystal faces...but its shape is determined by what is around it.)  

...but I'm no geologist.  

(It's also the title of a jazz album and is in the name of some fun video games...but that just made it harder to Google.)  

I wanted a song with a title that started with X.  
I wanted a song with a title that suggested that it would be cool and fun.  

So, be prepared to have a XENOBLAST with today's Interbay track.  It is a bouilabaisse of styles and sound fragments (though, isn't EVERY Interbay track?)--it's a synthy techy housey funky disco sort of thing with some robots and some classic late 80s r&b (and a dash of 90s italo house.)  

It's a hodge podge.  And, thus, it is very Interbay.  

I might, someday, go back and give this track a remix.  I was going for a blend of new and old--of Motown style "everything forward" mix, with modern instrumentation--but playing it back this morning, I think I overdid it in the mastering.  Might need to tone it down a bit and bring back some of the depth and organic feel.  

...but this is what this song is today--and I think its a blast (pun both intended and not intended.)  Hope you agree--good song for a Saturday, too!

Remember yesterday, when I said that I THOUGHT I knew what I was going to post--only to change my mind and, instead, posted the track I'd just finished?  

...well, I did it again.  

I thought for sure I would post the track I'd intended on posting yesterday today...but I'm keeping it in The Vault a little longer, as "Know a Man Who Does" pushed itself out the door before I could stop it.  

The conceit here is simple:  There is a genre of electronic dance music known as "UK Garage" and I thought, wouldn't it be fun to make a UK Garage song about an auto service and repair garage in the UK?  

Well, I thought it would be fun--and I think this track, the result of that stray thought, is pretty undeniably fun.  

There are tons of choppy edits--both of the beat and the UK car services ads I found to incorporate in the track.  The main beat is skippy and nearly full on electro or full on big beat in parts.  There are multiple basslines, each competing to be felt as the deepest one.  I threw in some trancey-synths, too!  (Because...well, Interbay.

Like yesterday's track, this one seemed to come together quite easily--in comparison with other Interbay tracks in progress that sometimes linger in the Vault waiting that one idea that makes it all make sense and only THEN does the track qualify for being released.  I knew what I needed to do as I did it, and then I done did it.  ;)  

Is this profound?  Will it change the world?  Is this the first sign that Interbay will someday dominate the world of music?  

Don't be silly!  

But, is the track good to listen to, fun to hear, and easy to tap your foot to...and what more could you want on a Thursday?
