Napoleon - The Very Short Introductions Podcast - Episode 78

In the age of absolutism, France had towered over European life and politics -- the only nation that was a major land power on the Continent and a colonial metropole with an overseas empire at the same time.  Yet by 1900, tossed about by repeated revolutions and coups and torn asunder by often petty internal culture wars, France was falling behind its rivals to become almost a second-rate power.  Once the Radical Party rode the Dreyfus Affair into government, they had to rush to reposition France to try to take advantage of the tensions and instability in the Balkans, and prepare the nation to possibly face off once more against their archrival across the Rhine -- Germany.

Origins of the First World War, pt. 8 -- France

From the Revolution’s earliest days, crowds were pivotal. A Parisian crowd toppled the symbol of the Old Regime’s despotism: the Bastille. A crowd led by Parisian market women brought the revolutionary National Assembly and the royal family away from the palace at Versailles and into the heart of the capital of Paris. Throughout the decade that followed, the Revolutionary crowd remained a significant political force—one to which the elected leaders in the National Assembly listened.

Understanding the formation, psychology, communication, and political aims of the revolutionary crowd has been a subject of scholarly study for at least fifty years. Recent work has made clear that peaceful collective action was a hallmark of the Revolution. Nevertheless, the specter of political violence remains in the ways that the Revolution is remembered—the linking of political violence and crowds so vividly rendered by early critics, such as Charles Dickens and Edmund Burke, has continued to resonate. Moreover, collective action remains an important locus of political communication and activity today. 

The French Revolutionary crowd is an especially rich case for considering up close the connections between collective action, democracy, and the power of emotion.

The trial and execution of Marie Antoinette (1755-1793), formerly the queen of France, was among the opening events of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution (1789-1799). Accused of a series of crimes that included conspiring with foreign powers against the security of France, Marie Antoinette was found guilty of high treason and executed on 16 October 1793.

The scale and horror of the First World War were possible only after the Nineteenth Century's double revolution in the nature of war. Warfare -- including weaponry, strategy, and command -- had remained mostly unchanged for three centuries, from the early integration of firearms in the 1400s until the French Revolution; the campaigns of Napoleon unleashed a new era of mass mobilization and nationalistic fury, while a series of haphazard improvements massively multiplied the killing power and reach of firearms, tearing open a battlefield "killing zone" unlike anything that prior generations of soldiers could have imagined. We follow both the breakdown in the old distinctions between war and civil society and the breakneck advance in land and sea warfare that set the stage for the nightmare of World War I.

The EVILution of Communism Workshop, Session 1

Communism is a religious view that has evolved and adapted over the last two centuries, including right up to the present day. Understanding the developments and threats in our present world requires understanding what Communism really is, especially in its Marxist variants, and how it has developed and changed over the years. In response to this need, James Lindsay of New Discourses held a four-lecture workshop series on the EVILution of Communism in Dallas, Texas, at the start of August 2024.

In the first of these lectures, Lindsay outlines the basics and origins of Communism both as a practical endeavor and as a sociognostic religious movement. He begins by outlining the broader theosophical and occult-mystical nature of a broad suite of belief systems and discusses how they began to graft themselves onto social, political, and economic programs in the middle of the Modern Period. This gives them new expression, although their fundamental core beliefs remain mostly unchanged. Using this foundation, Lindsay discusses the "crude" Communism of Gracchus Babeuf during the French Revolution and contrasts it against Karl Marx's "transcendent" Communism as described in his early writings. Discussing nineteenth century Communism sets the stage and table to discuss the evolution of this religious movement through the twentieth and into the twenty-first century.

Richard Poe: The British, The Jews, Communism, & World Government #501

239 years ago, on March 11, 1786, the French Diplomat (M.) Otto observed that, “strangers are less impelled thither by need than drawn by the enthusiasm inspired by the prospect of liberty, of abundance, and of happiness” in the soon-to-be state of Kentucky. 

This letter, along with others in the archives of the Kentucky Historical Society, describe the landscape, population, and people. Otto understood the potential chaos of attempting to become a part of the newly formed United States. The Frenchman, who was writing to the Minister of Foreign Affairs back in France, likely saw the parallels in a newly independent United States, and a mounting revolutionary spirit at home, as the French Revolution was on the horizon. He observed that those living in Kentucky, however, were willing to take on the potential conflict for self-representation.

Depuis mon enfance, la musique occupe une place particulière dans ma vie.
Les premières notes dont je me souviens remontent à quand j'avais 6 ans. J'écoutais alors des disques jetés par leur propriétaires et récupérés par mon père. 
Sur mon tout premier tourne-disques (sans écran à l'époque ;-) ), je passais mes journées à écouter toujours les 2 ou 3 mêmes disques de Mozart, Beethoven, Santana .... enfin ... les disques dont certaines personnes avaient estimé pertinent de se séparer.
Alors, quand vers 8-9 ans, je me suis retrouvé derrière un piano, j'ai rapidement retrouvé les repères de ce langage universel au bout de mes doigts. J'ai alors découvert d'autres génies de la musique : Chopin, Vivaldi, Bach mais aussi Hans Zimmer, James Horner, John Williams ....
Jouer la musique les musiques qu'on me demandait à toujours été un plaisir et est venu étoffer ma culture musicale. 
Et ma musique aujourd'hui est, je pense, le fruit de toute ces rencontres.
Au fur et à mesure, m'est venu l'envie de créer, composer.
Chose qui me paraissait impossible, moi qui n'ai pas eu de formation musicale classique.
Les choses sont pourtant venues naturellement. Mon leitmotiv étant que la musique est faite pour être partagée. 
Si elle me procure des émotions, peut-être quelques autres personnes pourraient ressentir les mêmes.
Alors partage les .... et la chance fera peut-être son travail pour les emmener jusqu'à vos oreilles... pour mon plus grand des plaisirs.
