Vonda Pelto's Physical & Psychological Damage From Working With Serial Killers & Criminals In LA Central Jail: Vonda Pelto, Ph.D., author of Without Remorse: The Story of the Woman Who Kept Los Angeles' Serial Killers Alive, is asked by James Lowe about the psychological and physical damage she suffered from her three and a half years dealing with nearly a dozen serial killers and a host of other criminals of various stripes and talents.  

She admitted it had made her a bit more salty in her language and that "she swear like a longshoreman" and that she is "hell on wheels at women's clubs."  But that is the light side, the dark involved constant paranoia when venturing out, making sure her house is secure, finding it very difficult to trust people because Vonda dealt with men who told her about their horrific crimes of killing people in graphic detail.  

Indeed the whole atmosphere at the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail was oppressive, still is, in ways that are difficult to convey in words.  Vonda admitted the experience nearly broke her and that she nearly committed suicide, but she had two children and was therefore trapped in the jail until she passed her state board exams and became a licensed Clinical Psychologist.  Once Vonda got that she didn't hesitate to quit, but that experience is still with her over 30-years later.

Vonda Pelto's Physical & Psychological Damage from Working Closely with Serial Killers & Criminals

Surviving with Serial Killers in Los Angeles Men's Central, Confessions of Trash Bag Murderer, Vonda Pelto on Thunderstruck Radio: Early in the two hours interview of Vonda Pelto, Ph.D., Without Remorse: The Story of the Woman Who Kept Los Angeles' Serial Killers Alive, is asked about the transformation from sweet, young Southern Baptist girl with two kids to this rather fascinating and salty woman so many decades later?  She says her three years counseling serials killers and criminals transformed her because she had to, of course, harden her attitude to verbal abuse, hearing stories about gruesome murders and sexual crimes from those who did the job, the very tense atmosphere of the largest jail in the world, Los Angeles Men's Central Jail, and just surviving the job.  

To demonstrate this point she tells the radio talk show host about  meeting someone involved in the Trash Bag Murders at the Bonaventure Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.  He didn't commit the murders but was forced to stay in the room while the perpetrator took the bodies into the bathroom and hacked them into pieces while screaming and freebasing the whole time.  He was scared to death this psycho would turn on him so he played ball and, quite luckily, survived to tell Vonda Pelto the story.    

This person was nervous and agitated, which made hearing the story even worse.  During the conversation she had to excuse herself because she felt like throwing up.

Is There a Progression From Rapist to Serial Killer, Vonda Pelto Talks About Jeffrey Dahmer: Vonda Pelto, Ph.D. who is a Clinical Psychologist and spent over 3 years dealing with a number of notorious serial killers, is asked by Sancho Jones, host of Thunderstruck Radio, about whether there is a progression from rapist or other crimes to serial killer.  She says maybe, but not always.  

For example, Jeffrey Dahmer, wanted homosexual sex but then ended up accidentally killing his victim with drugs and then ended eating them after killing them.  A pretty weird progression indeed.  He, like all other serial killers, did not feel any guilt about his crimes and probably didn't realize the suffering he had caused his victims.  

Obviously Vonda never had any contact with Dahmer but serial killers do display various characteristics that are common and one of them seem to be progressing in cruelty to keep the thrill and rush in tact.  William Bonin went from enjoying the torture and raping of his young boy victims to basically getting more thrills about of the act of strangling them to death, a sad commentary indeed.

Vonda Pelto Innocence Lost on Job at LA Men's Central Jail Dealing with Serial Killers, Rapists, High Profile Criminals and Other Miscreants: Sancho Jones ask Vonda Pelto, author of Without Remorse: The Story of the Woman Who Kept Los Angeles' Serial Killers Alive, how much innocence she truly lost by taking the job babysitting serial killers and other criminals at LA Men's Central Jail from 1979 to 1982.  She said it really made her jaded and if she knew what it was going to cost emotionally and physically she probably wouldn't have taken the job.  

Hindsight in 20/20 and she did take the job for a variety of reasons and now, many decades later, she is telling the story about men like John Holmes, Hillside Strangler Kenneth Bianchi, Sunset Strip Slayer Douglas Clark, Freeway Killer William Bonin, Psychotic would be murderer Arthur Jackson and host of rapists and other miscreants. 

With a new Ph.D. in her pocket, the 30 year old Vonda Pelto walked into the LA Men's Central Jail with eyes wide open and was totally shocked from the very moment she arrived.  Soon she developed a tough exterior but the experience almost caused a nervous breakdown and did lead to a suicide attempt.

Butler. She spent a number of years monitoring serial killers and violent criminals in Los Angeles Men's Central Jail from 1981 to 1984. Amongst those she kept tabs on were Freeway Killer Bill Bonin, Hillside Stranglers Kenneth Bianchi and his cousin Angelo Buoni, Sunset Strip Slayer Douglas Clark and famed porn star John Holmes, who was being held in connection with the famed Wonderland Murders.
