When I was going through my Mothers things I found some of her old recordings from the 80's. In another life she was a singer songwriter who had a dream of making an album. However after years of struggling with mental illness the medications prescribed made it difficult for her to further pursue music. I had a long internal debate if I should share her songs and story with the public at large. I felt her songs were powerful, duh, she's my Mom, but I also felt like it was time to stop being bullied by the stigma of mental illness and how it effects families. In sharing her material I want to bring public awareness that members of our society suffer from the debilitating effects of this disease but yet the care, conversation, and support are sorely lacking for everyone involved. I read somewhere a term referring to the victims of mental illness as the "no cake illness", meaning after diagnosis they are shunned and hidden away without any recognition that they are suffering from an incurable disease. Be kind to one another, refrain from judgment, and know that while it may appear impossible to walk in another's shoes we should at least attempt to do so with empathy and sympathy. Please help erase the stigma of mental illness. If you can, donate to those entities in your community that counsel, care, and assist those living with mental illness.

In sharing her story I really hope it will inspire others to not be afraid to talk about their experiences with mental illness. People don't realize that mental illness can be a life threatening condition, unfortunately the resources and care are not there to help everyone in need. Even then our society bears such a stigma against mental illness that those that suffer from it have the additional battle of the discrimination they experience daily. Talking about it, being candid, and raising awareness that real, amazing, talented humans suffer in silence with this debilitating illness.
