DC Promo Tracks #756: Max Essa "Tempo Babadoh"

Relative newcomer Recut Music wasted no time generating serious measures of heat with their two previous disco-fuelled releases, and the latest four-track instalment, as expected, represents nothing less than a dance-floor guarantee.
On the controls once again is the mysterious but eminently talented one they call Recut – a recently adopted and delightfully enigmatic moniker of an already well-established producer who's clearly enjoying the freedom his new anonymity brings. Fans of the label will know approximately what to expect – well-crafted and floor-filling disco/house dubs that are aimed squarely at the DJ.
Opening cut 'Groove a Thon' sees Recut work his magic on Isaac Hayes' 1976 classic to stunning effect, beefing up the bottom end bump to maximise the bass power while expertly reworking the arrangement to allow the horns, guitar chops and flanged groove free rein to energise the floor.
Meanwhile, rolling funk is embellished by Recut's limber scratches on 'Tox Disco', making use of ultra-infectious slap bass, heavenly strings and compelling drum fills to grind, pop and gyrate over six gloriously funk-flecked minutes.
On the flip, 'Dirty Fun' strips things back just a touch, with syncopated reggae stabs and dubbed-out delay explosions forging a saucer-eyed psychedelic joyride that meanders and mesmerises over heavy-duty bass.
Completing an excellent quartet is 'Afro Machine', whose tripped-out textures and haunting chants evolve patiently over a slick percussive groove, with delayed piano licks and dramatic stabs dancing over deep bass and laser-tight drums.
Release number three is sure to further cement Recut Music's growing reputation as a series that club-minded connoisseurs simply can't ignore. Pure, unadulterated fire.

Recut - Tox Disco <Gouranga Premiere>

Since slipping out on Leng last year, Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy’s first collaboration with singer/songwriter David Harks, ‘Susta’, has become a much-played modern Balearic classic, with DJs and listeners alike responding to the track’s attractive blend of sun-kissed nu-disco instrumentation, warming melodies and deliciously evocative lead vocals from Jaanika Leino AKA JaneLy.

Now the track returns for 2021 in the shape of two superb new remixes from Chicagoan deep house legend Ron Trent, who four years ago delivered similarly ear-catching revisions of Mudd and Pollard’s ‘Far Away’ as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations for Murphy’s Claremont 56 label.

As you’d expect given Trent’s impeccable track record over the last three decades, both revisions are stunning. He begins by eking every last ounce of soul from Leino’s brilliant vocal on a remix that’s warming, deep and luscious. Combining elements of Murphy and Harks’ colourful, synth-heavy original mix – including the lusciously tactile bassline and boogie-style synth flourishes – with his own yearning chords, hand percussion sounds and a shuffling, samba-tinged house beat, Trent re-imagines ‘Susta’ as a future vocal deep house classic. Melodious, musically intricate, infectious and summery, it’s a remix for the ages.

It comes accompanied by a Dub Mix that successfully shows off the intricacy of Trent’s production and additional instrumentation while keeping both eyes firmly on the dancefloor. Beginning with effects-laden synth sounds reminiscent of the mid-‘80s proto-house classics by Paul Simpson, Winston Jones and Boyd Jarvis, the mix sees Trent skilfully add selected snippets of Leino’s lead vocal to a backing track rich in delay-laden synthesizer sounds, reverb-rich chords, echoing percussion hits and chords so warming they feel like a late-night, loved-up bear hug for your ears. Like the A-side vocal version, Trent’s dub is breath-taking and spine-tingling in equal measure.

Harks & Mudd - Susta (Ron Trent Dub)

MAKS is 17 yr old Ben Marks a Sheffield based aspiring Musician, Producer / DJ & this, his debut release. Introduced to us by the always wonderful ‘Yarni' we were instantly drawn to how MAKS single ’North’ took us back to the 90’s. It’s also no surprise to hear that MAKS is a big fan of guys such as William Orbit & Moby.

Remix wise ’Sauco’ joins us again following his recent EP on COV & he stays true to the original yet effortlessly adds his magical Balearic touch.

Yarni (Well we had to) delivers remix number two and it’s a wonderful reimagining that further proves to us that he is one of the most creative producers out there.

This is a wonderful EP from a very talented young man with fantastic remixes from producers we much admire.

PREMIERE: MAKS - North (Sauco Remix) [Citizens Of Vice]

I Can't Sleep was originally written back in 2012 while working on tracks for the Won Ton Sunrise LP. It didn't make it onto the album, but in 2020 a new version was recorded with Okinawa Delays and released on Archipelago Records. This dub version of the original 2012 demo is available now from Jansen Jardin (see buy link).

The product of an intense love affair with the Casio CZ-5000 synthesiser, the eCZtasy EP sees the cult producer, DJ, remixer, NTS resident and label head Ruf Dug release on his own label for the first time in 4 years. 2019 was the year that Manchester’s Simon Hindle released EPs on Futureboogie and Rhythm Section, tackled FACT’s Against The Clock and embarked on a tour that took in Pikes, Gottwood, Love International, Berlin, Tel Aviv, Moscow and more. He kicks off 2020 with the first release on a reinvigorated Ruf Kutz label.

Ruf Dug says “After hearing the Satoshi & Makoto album and checking their youtubes I just HAD to own a CZ-5000… it wasn’t long till I managed to snare one and got lost in its tones… this record contains some of the highlights of that whirlwind romance.”

The A side sees Ruffy in full-on peaking rave mode as opener INWARD CONVERSION PROCESS shows off the classy, glassy tones of the CZ-5000 from the outset as 11th chords stack up on one another to create a euphoric future anthem that takes in the best bits of prog, trance, dream house - with the occasional zouky drum pattern to remind you that the tropical cyberpunk is at the console.

There’s no time to rest up as we cascade immediately into WET PLAY BANGER - surely Ruf Dug’s trackiest release ever, almost a DJ tool more than a tune. The CZ’s sequencer comes into play here as pattern after pattern collide, co-mingle and then disperse with the effect of boosting dopamine & serotonin levels in all who experience. Named for the infamous Manchester club night which Ruffy & pals started, this one has been stress-tested on the universe’s finest dance floor and emerged, wide-eyed and mindless, to be captured here on wax for you…

The B side welcomes a change of pace. Opener SHOPPIN has the CZ-5000 re-purposed as Balearic conspirator, adding an ibicenco skank & sandy pans to a rugged DMX beat that suggests Laid Back making a lost dub for Saada Bonaire. The B2, FRUITY DANCE, sprays a cubensis mist over the Casio and dials the exotica setting up to infinity as woozy bells and live drum samples get all tapey and loose to close out a very welcome return to Ruf Kutz for its proprietor.
