Any artist is welcome to send us a track via freshonthenet.co.uk anytime between Monday lunchtime and Wednesday evening (or when we receive 200 submissions, whichever is sooner) - and all our moderators, including Tom Robinson, will listen to every track. This is our full inbox from the week beginning Mon 7th Nov: from Friday afternoon you'll be able to hear our shortlist and pick your favourites on this week's Listening Post which will appear at freshonthenet.co.uk/batch466

If a track you submitted does not appear in this list, it’s probably because another of your tracks appeared in our Fresh Faves or on the BBC Music Introducing Mixtape during the last three months — we ask that artists featured on either wait three months before resubmitting to give others a chance. 

We also don’t accept short previews or SoundCloud Go tracks that can only be heard as 30 second previews, and tracks made private after submission, which cannot be included in playlists. You will be able to resubmit the track in future. Tracks (and remixes of tracks) that have been previously submitted, and tracks from banned artists will also be removed.

Christmas songs and the like are also not eligible for the Listening Post, although we will collect these into a playlist that will be published on 24 December.

Many people simply want to hear and enjoy some great new music without having to waste time searching for hours. These Musical Discoveries collections aim to fulfil those needs. At least, we hope so! :)

This playlist is a compilation of the favourite musical discoveries of the Wud Records team from everything they heard at SoundCloud during June 2023.

Tracks have been arranged according to the number of plays at the precise moment of publishing, starting with the fewest. Tracks that are early in playlists tend to receive more plays than later tracks, and we feel that the ones with fewer plays need the best chance of exposure.

This playlist is extremely eclectic, so if the track you are playing isn't quite doing it for you, try the next one. It will probably be completely different.

If you enjoyed listening to something here, please give it a like and a repost. Follow the artist. Give them a shoutout on social media. Check out some of their other tracks. Buy something from them and your support will help them to keep going. Doing any of this will help raise their profile. At the very least you might make their day. :)

Sharing is very, very important !!

Sharing is a massive help for independent artists. They don’t have big corporations and mainstream media saturating every channel with their product. Every independent share counts.

Giving something a ‘like’ is nice, but sharing exposes the artist to your followers. This means that anybody in your community can see and click on what you shared. They can potentially enjoy it as well. It enables somebody new to discover the artist and become their newest fan. You create the chance for that to happen.

'Tower of Babel' was born of humming birds and the three years of viscous river ooze dripping from our mouths. a boschian tale of queer fertility, a line under everything, a nervous glimpse of something scurrying under the bed. all this and more explored throughout its monumental twenty minute runtime. this album stumbles naked from noise rock to hyperfolk, always completely delirious, vomiting darkwave and a kind of minimalism onto your lawn.

the first single is called 'manta ray'. something horrible has washed up on the shore, in your room, at the club, in this dream. in this dream i am running towards some glimmer of moonlight, hollow and completely out of my mind.

i am trying to break through to you, the listener; i want nothing more than to be the swirling vortex of feedback and pop sensibilities that you need me to be. this album is a part of that, i think. i hope there is something for you, no matter how brief. thank you.

"I could quite justifiably have reviewed The Fantom Man Feat. St3v3L33 and the track The End in the Jazz and International Journeys section given how much it is based on reverberating sax improv and rich jazz-infused piano chords but he calls it Ambient and, in essence, it is because of the way he has spaced out the sounds, put them through echo and other effects and created an enigmatic sound world. It is very musical and full of inventiveness with great dynamic contrasts and an ending that sees the track quietly deconstruct as unaccompanied sax fades into the ether. With its washes of synths strings, tinkering electronic piano, detached vocals and layered harmonies delivered in Cromwell’s lush baritone, ‘The Winter Palace’ evokes an icy cold soundscape fit for the months of winter. Where the title track of his recent album ‘Memory Box’ is about losing the power of recall, ‘The Winter Palace’ is about trying to forget a lost love, but being haunted by them in his memory. Cromwell sings to his former love “I dream of you regardless, whether I am asleep or awake”.

With a majestic sweeping synth solo, that wouldn’t sound out of place on Bowie’s ‘Low’, sonically the song sits between classic new wave artists like Joy Division or OMD and more contemporary acts like Ladytron or Black Marble.

The B-side ‘Rod, Jane and Freddy,’ with its squelchy vintage synths and rumbling krautrock beat, is a playful technicoloured instrumental named after the performance group from 1980’s ITV children’s show Rainbow. 

‘The Winter Palace’ was recorded in Cromwell’s home studio in Catford, South London and was produced in Brooklyn, New York at ACME Hall Studio by Rich Bennett.

Since the release of his debut 'Age of Anxiety' album, Rodney Cromwell has been featured by the likes of NME, Electronic Sound, Huffington Post, Paste, Shindig!, Louder Than War, The Big Takeover, Magic RPM and the Bandcamp homepage. He’s had national radio play in Japan, Finland, Germany and multiple spins on RTE in Ireland, on BBC 6 Music in the UK and RNE3 in Spain for whom he recorded a live session.

The Rodney Cromwell live set is a joyful mixed-media extravaganza, incorporating analogue synths, video visuals and live instrumentation, interjected by Rodney’s 'offbeat wit'' (NME). His debut festival appearance at Indietracks was described as 'like a spiritual experience". He has shared stages with acts including A Flock of Seagulls, Pram, Death & Vanilla, Rowetta, M!R!M and Steve Davis. His sole performance in 2020 was as part of Damo Suzuki's backing band. In 2022 he recorded a live session for Electronic Sound and in autumn 2022 he is playing a number of dates supporting Blancmange.

"The latest offering from The Fantom Man could arguably be described as Ambient Jazz. Gent El Saxo features St3v3L33 and it places TFM’s echoing saxophone switching between a cool melody and bits of improv while the backdrop is more like a downtempo electronic track with programmed beat and sounds coming in and out of the mix behind the sax which dominates throughout. It has a kind of calming atmosphere and the contrast between the organic and the electronic works really well."
