I met @hss-2 in Tokyo in Summer 2019, along with Yama, Takanori and Takashi. Hisashi was my first friend in Tokyo and he introduced me to the city's incredible nightlife. At the end of my time there he invited me to a party in a curry restaurant at the top of a skyscraper by the sea. One of the best nights of my life!

"I've recently had the pleasure of playing quite a few nice gigs and also have a few lined up so the mix was basically a product of me going through the selections of the recent / soon to come shows and playing the "other" tracks from these records. Other meaning, well, there is always that one track that comes to your mind when you see the record, the track you pack the record for, that track you always play. you know? So in this mix i played the other tracks from these records. Plus a few new ones thrown in as well that fitted the flow. Plus an edit given to me from my buddy Florist, plus one of my edits. All over the vibe i would say is between Bleep and Ambient Techno/House with a few trancy overtones, but quite driving and dancable."

Sling & Samo are the exiting duo behind the Born Free record label which resides in Stockholm. Over the last few years the pair have been releasing a vast array of weird, wonderful, oddball music: some built for the dancefloor and some certainly not. The pair are colourful characters who don't take themselves or what they do too seriously. Samo is also well known in his own right as a producer and dj having released music for the likes of LIES, The Trilogy Tapes and Public Possession but together with Sling the pair enter a new realm of musical exploration. We asked them to record a mix for us.

Elena Colombi B2B Interstellar Funk 31/12/18 - NTS Radio

Chinese born Tzusing has spent time in Chicago, Singapore and Taiwan and “this condition of dislocation” is what informs his music. It is a brash mix of industrial textures, harsh broken techno and subversive pop, trap and rap that is all blurred into one borderless offering that mirrors his own personal intersections. That music has come on LIES since 2011 and has given rise to standout LP 東方不敗 in 2017 that lead to shows on Boiler Room, Dommune and at Berghain. 

He was quiet on the release front in 2018, but has started this year with a new split EP on Pan, and now offers us a musical catch up ahead of him playing at Dekmantel Festival later in the year. Over the course of seventy minutes he jumps around restlessly, but somehow his sounds remain united by shiny metallic surfaces whether he’s mixing in Asian pop, whirring computer sounds in meltdown or horror-core. To us, it sounds like a futuristic soundtrack to some hyper urban metropolis that’s on the brink of collapse, and it’s genuinely compelling.

Expect the unexpected. That's the philosophy Rotterdam-based DJ mad miran promotes in her DJ sets. A regular on the Dutch capital's mainstay Red Light Radio and a face behind the counter at the infamous Clone record shop, Miran has fast become one of the country's most promising DJs. 

Although she only played her first DJ set in a club a couple of years ago, she's already landed a residency at Trouw successor De School and become part of the Strange Sounds From Beyond family, seeing her name spread like wildfire and lead to a string of gigs across Europe.

We invited her to dive into her record bag for us and the result is 80 minutes of leftfield electro, raw breaks and introspective electronica. Enter into the crazy world of mad miran...

mad miran: The 'Wednesday Alternative' Mix

Amsterdam has been graced with a fearsome array of fabulous selectors and disc jockeys in recent times, the city is abuzz with experimental music and talent. 

Orpheu The Wizard has been a pivotal figure in the development of the scene, crucially helping to nurture new faces through his key role as a co founder of Redlight radio - a distinctive platform which has acted as a gateway and an open door to a new wave of music, producers and dj's. 

His own background is well versed, he's earnt his stripes and played the long game building a respectable array of musical knowledge and selective talent which he uses to entice and delight crowds across Europe and beyond. Eclectic, far reaching and multi purpose - his sets often run wild across a sprawling spectrum of sound. 

This year he will play at Love International festival, an appearance which should not be missed.

Orpheu The Wizard: The Ransom Note Mix

Step back, this is a big one. 

Across the past couple of decades there have been very few who can attest as much influence as that of Joakim, a singular producer who has been charted as an influential figure by many of the leading producers and disc jockeys in the present.

The French outsider has amassed a notorious reputation for his eclectic style as a disc jockey and producer having released music on the likes of Versatile, Kitsuné Music, Life And Death, Crosstown Rebels and beyond. As the founder behind Tigersushi Records and Crowdspacer he has been responsible for leading a new generation of talent into the dance and has played a key role in the future development of dance and electronic music. 

As an individual his own take on music is wide and vast, not one to shy away from the alternative or experimental he has done well to channel a sprawling array of style, genre and sound across his own lengthy career and in all honesty Joakim continues to surprise and intrigue with delight. 

A Dj's dj, he is a firm favourite and we welcome him as part of the series.

During these unsettling times, it has become clearer than ever the critical role music plays in lifting our spirits. With stress becoming a ubiquitous factor in our everyday lives, the need to tune into something more serene grows. This is something Unrush founder Mareena is aware of, which is why she has personally prepared an hour of lush, tender atmospherics to ease us out of this worried world and into the present moment of endless tranquillity. Mareena's passion for music is contagious, and her mixes exemplify this as much as her curatorial prowess. She blends elements almost as if she was the forest floor, supporting the sprouting buds with essential nutrients while letting the old-growth be seen in all its glory. There's a lot to be said for those who work behind the counter, those who sell records and carry an encyclopedic knowledge of music without necessarily shouting about it to all far flung corners of the world. Often they are the most sincere, most knowledgeable and most dependable of all having offered countless recommendations to customers and buyers for little reward but for their sheer love of music. 

Dj Skimask is an alias of Patrick Henderson, a London based collector and occasional disc jockey who works behind the counter at one of the most loved second hand record stores in the UK. Reckless Records still proudly waves a flag as one of the most reputable record dealers in the country and has been built upon the dependability, curation and assistance of friends and staff. 

As a collector and a DJ, Patrick's own taste is impeccable, spanning a breadth of wild electronics, experimental soundscapes and beyond. We asked him to record a mix which represents a portion of his collection and he delivers in fine style.
