As a centre of gravity to Maputo’s burgeoning alternative music scene, Nandele Maguni (@nndle) has been a prolific innovator and collaborator, and a challenge to any preconceptions of what is expected from a Mozambican artist in 2020.

Born into a musical household -  his father was the first black director of Mozambique's national radio - Nandele has been involved in many of Maputo's recent progressive musical projects, as a drummer, rapper, club promoter, beat maker, and al round polymath.

Fusing industrial and dystopian sound palettes with fragments of traditional instrumentation and mythology, the FF EP showcases a future-facing vision which is tapped into the rich, and often turbulent cultural history of the lusophone diaspora. Chugging EBM-esque rhythms collide with tough Hip Hop beats, dark ambience is met with cascading synth melodies, all tied together with a coherence and minimalism found in the most confident of creatives.

Released on digital and 20 limited edition hand-cut vinyls, with silk-screen printed artwork by prominent Maptuo visual artist João Roxo

"Laulik-elektroonik" LP by an ex-pat Estonian musician Olev Muska is the new release of Estonian archival label Frotee Records. The compilation subtitled as "Explorations in Estonian Electronic Folk Music - The First Years, 1979-1983" brings together all Muska's Estonian-themed songs recorded prior to his debut album from 1985, "Old Estonian Waltzes". It includes previously unreleased material and tracks from limited edition tapes and 7" single. For its 10th release, Frotee has expanded its scope and is now also offering insights into quality music by Estonians all over the world.

Olev Muska was born to a family of expatriate Estonians in Australia. From 1979 onwards he recorded unique versions of Estonian folk songs on various electronic music instruments at his home studio. As Muska was into contemporary experimental music and also bored with the conservative take on Estonian culture prevalent in the activities of the Australian ex-pat community, he decided to combine these two influences to create his unique brand of electronic Estonian folk music. As Muska had access to more advanced musical equipment, he achieved a level of quality in his arrangements that would not have been possible in Soviet Estonia. He managed to create surprisingly amazing Estonian minimal wave with his group Elektrio but wasn't ashamed to make medley of Estonian themes with cheesy-sounding small Casio synthesizer either. His early versions of some folk songs, like "Kaera-Jaan" or "Saaremaa", are less crazy than on his debut LP and as such a welcome addition to Frotee's collection of balearic sounds.

Although Muska was not a stranger to the contemporary Australian underground music scene, he continued to record with a couple of close friends and performed only at local Estonian events. Thus Olev Muska has been a well kept secret amongst Estonian music fans, one that remained entirely unknown to Australian record collectors until Chris Bonato from Left Ear Records introduced "Old Estonian Waltzes" LP to a wider audience. Left Ear Records has now licensed "Karjapoisi lugu" off the 1985 LP for their Australian underground music compilation "Antipodean Anomalies". Hopefully both of these compilations will help to bring more recognition to Estonian musical genius in Australia!

Electroacoustic music is one of the youngest phenomena in contemporary music culture. For this reason, the study of its history and aesthetic principles; research of instruments and tools; analysis of the electroacoustic composers’ works in Ukraine and over the world just begins. In 1997 with the support of International Renaissance Foundationat the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy was created first Electroacoustic music studio in Ukraine and the Music Technologies Department. The first professors of The Department were Igor Piaskovski, Igor Stetsyuk, Alla Zagaykevych, Sviatoslav Luniov, who created their own courses: "Computer analysis of music texts", "Electronic sound synthesis", "Composition, synthesis and audio processing with a computer ","History of electroacoustic music", "Music technologies".
In the circle of contemporary composers initiated regular international projects with concerts and workshops "Electroacoustics" (since 2003) and "EM - VISIA (since 2005) (director Alla Zagaykevych), where the music composed by students and graduates of Academy is regularly performed.
Electronic music studio collaborates with ethnomusicologists and provides mutual researches using acoustic research methods. In 2011 professors and composers of the Department created Ukrainian Association of Electroacoustic Music (Chairman – Alla Zagaykevych), which became a member of the International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music CIME / ICEM.

the International Electroacoustic Workshops (Kyiv, 2017), dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Music Technologies Department and Electroacoustic Studio at the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy – first attempt at a thorough study of Ukrainian electroacoustic music. The CDs contains the works of Ukrainian composers from 1964 until 2017.

It was yesterday's news, thrown out to be drenched in the pouring rain. Though she'd disagree, nobody cared anymore, they'd already moved on to the next disposable piece of gossip. That was just how things worked, the life cycle of information, regardless of its validity, was shorter than most...

In recent years the underground electronic music scene in Mozambique's capital of Maputo has begun to garner some attention across the pond, put on the map by artists and producers like reputed beat maker and all round musical polymath Nandele. Having been surrounded by music from a young age, Nandele's influences stretch far and wide, from early influences like Fela Kuti, Kanda Bongo Man and Hugh Masekela to the 90s hip hop beats he used to freestyle over and the grunge band he went on to play drums in at the latter end of the decade.

All of these experiences further ignited his love for drums and later his move into electronic production, which has led to releases on the likes of Kongoloti Records, Already Dead and now London-based imprint Cotch International. His new EP is about challenging preconceptions of what a Mozambique artist should be creating and sees him blending elements of industrial, EBM, minimal synth and heavy hip hop beats with traditional instrumentation and mythology.
