For a while I've pondered the idea of trying to do a piece of music to synchronize with the final "Star-gate Sequence" in the movie "2001 A Space Odyssey". Its one of my favorite films, and this sequence is still amazing. This idea, in a similar vein to Pink Floyd's "Echoes", isn't so much an alternative soundtrack, just another way of enjoying this sequence, as the original soundtrack for me is irreplaceable!
I set up a project in Ableton live using 1 instance of a Moog V for that typical TD sequence bass, a 2 instances of a VCS 3 doing a complimentary bass and an analogue lead, several Mellotrons (Gforce's Mtron Pro), with typical recognizable sounds such as the Choir, Flute, Vibes, Orchestra, Piano and some FX, and ARP2600 for FX and synth percussion. I also used several instances of Guitar Rig Pro to put everything through vintage style FX, to give it a vaguely grungy spacey feel.
With this set up I spent a few hours just playing, improvising and having fun... getting lost in all the swirling spaciness :)
I did a one take "live" recording of an arrangement and used this as the basis for the track. At this point I hadn't played along with the movie, it was just an arrangement of what felt right at the time.
I then put the music with the sequence in Premier and was quite surprised to see it kind of fit :)! I then added in some additional cues to help it and emphasise some parts, and also extended the track to the end of the sequence (my "live" version came to 14 mins).

When I was 14 and trying to learn to play guitar no one told me about A440 tuning. I knew how to tune the guitar string to string, but wasn't aware that records and what I heard on the radio had a standard. I soon became frustrated trying to play along with what I heard and began making up my own music. Still at it.
