080 - Little Louie Vega - United DJs of America Volume 2 'New York City' (1995)

The mighty Doc Martin is probably the LA underground’s most famed export. Ask anyone who’s heard this hardworking house troubadour play a three-hour set anywhere in the world and they’ll tell you about his superb and eclectic taste (finding the perfect balance between soulful and trippy), his wizardry with the crossfader and his uncanny instinct for getting a crowd going. Back in the day his residency at legendary afterhours warehouse Flammable Liquid represented the transition from rave to house, both over the course of any given late night, and over the years as the scene matured. At this session from the height of the rave scene in November ’91, you can hear Doc mix energetic techno and breakbeat tunes (‘The Bouncer’ by Kicks Like a Mule; Hold It Down by 2 Bad Mice) with deeper, dubbier, more advanced stuff – like his signature anthem, Feel It by Coco Steel & Lovebomb, worked to great effect on two copies here.

About the CD:
002 of the Classic Mix CD Series and yet another absolute stand out classic. After getting into house at around 15, I guess my only source of info was Danny Rampling's seminal LGDP (Love Groove Dance Party) Saturday nights on Radio 1. However I can't remember Carter getting much coverage on there, yet he, much like Danny Tenaglia seemed to have a level of legend unlike most. This CD cemented my love of house music with an all might smash in the face. The tempo, the bass, the disco, the filters, and fucked up vocals... this was heavyweight. Nothing could compete at the time. I'll always remember driving to college with my 2 nerdy class mates and insisting they played this CD in the car. I'm raving in the back and they are like "What the fuck is this shit, turn it down!". It's with immense pleasure that DJ's like Sneak and Carter seem to be booking all the massive clubs and parties again. I'm not so keen on the whole 'I'm a House Gangster' vibe... but this is as bad as it gets.

002 - Mixmag presents - Derrick Carter 'The Cosmic Disco' (1997)

Class of 88 is a weekly DJ mix live stream by Mr.C on his socials containing music from 1986-1992 that became the backbone of the Acid House revolution & birth of Rave Culture itself. Mr.C has now made Class of 88 a bi-weekly podcast where he's now inviting his favourite 80s House & Techno DJs to join the podcast party. The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Hey, Gareth here, I'm a graphic designer who start designing for clubs, parties, and labels in the late 90s. Back then, mix CDs were the holy grail of both design and music. I loved them.

But I wasn't the only one, mix cds were the soundtracks of our nights, our days, our afterparties and lives, for everyone. Yet in today's internet age, the art form has been lost (or just changed) to 2-3 hour online mixes and streaming videos, which just don't create the same magic your CD collection did. Just 60 minutes of music and incredible artwork.

The Classic Mix CD Series celebrates these discs, their soundtrack, their box art and your memories. We hope you enjoy it.
