An absolutely epic house CD released in 1996 by the fine folks at MOS. This one was actually a swap with a certain ginger friend for something else (hope he doesn't ask for it back) although it was swapped for something good so maybe it's not a bad thing. This Frankie Knuckles mix features some incredible tracks including all time favourites Ken Lou - The Bounce, Lil Mo Yin Yang - Reach, X Press 2 - The Sound and many many more. It is indeed, a banger.

About the CD:
My second ever house CD! I bought this one for my Christmas box through the Metro Centre in Newcastle if I remember correctly and it was the real catalyst for getting me into clubland and house music. Featuring artists that defied genres and  the underground/overground such as Leftfield, Living Joy, Wildchild and Inner City... this was music all of the UK was dancing too not just to cool kids. A pretty amazing time to be a young kid getting into music heavily... my biggest regret... not buying turntables!

So for episode 034 we had a lot of shouts after sharing the first disc on this compilation, which was the Jeremy Healy one. (Also excellent). But with so many requests it was time to get the Whitehead one up there, and after listening to again for the first time in over 10 years or so the memories of its brilliance came flooding back. It's a more soulful set with come epic vocal and feel good moments which made the mid to late 90's a much more enjoyable place to be.

So many stand out tracks but off the top of my head, Right and Exact, Tall and Handsome, Weekend, I Believe, Happiness and the highlight for me, the epic 'Sweetest Day of May' by Joe T. Vannelli Project. It's fantastically put together and a mix with truly belongs into the classic status. Whatever you're up to now Alistair... we salute you!

About the cd:
A superb surprise episode for 041 in the series. Massive thanks to Nick Sneddon for sending over some epic CDs recently. We are really happy to feature more downtempo CDs... it feels like the recovery soundtrack to countless nights clubbing and those sun kissed days that followed (well maybe not so much if you grew up in the UK).

Considering this came out in 1996, it features some simply gorgeous deep house and laid back electronic which go onto cement why DJ Harvey is a cult dj amongst fans and fellow spinners. It's a pleasure not just remember my own collection, but have other people send in theirs. And it's even better discovering that there's hundreds of other classics out there which need to be shared with everyone. Thanks again for the good vibes.

The 2nd voyage into the sonic trip of my youth, and a tribute to the sounds that shaped so much of what I listen to today. 

This part deux represents a time in the late 1990s when pioneering artists were beginning to fuse live instrumentation, electronic programming, vocal snippets, and hip-hop sensibility.   It got labeled things like "chill" or "trip hop" or "lounge" or "acid jazz" ... but those early recordings really gave birth to unbelievable exploration.

For many of us, this music is that fleeting moment before the internet took over everything.  Record shops and mail order outfits were the only way to find new records and CDs.  Indie magazines, especially Straight No Chaser, were like Bibles.  E-mail groups were key (what up, all you old Acid Jazz Mailing List vets!).  The resulting pause-button mixtapes we all trafficked in were an excruciating art.  

The host of labels that sprouted up to fill the void were eclectic, scattered across the globe and bangin: Guidance Recordings, Stereo Deluxe, G-Stone, Cup Of Tea, Mo Wax, Jazz Fudge, Shadow Records, Eighteenth Street Lounge, K7, Yellow Productions, Disorient, Ninja Tune, etc. etc ... They'd pluck it off the streets and make it global with no real plan for making money.  And it was awesome because it was all about the music.

So here is my tribute to that era (and my recent journey through old dusty stacks of wax and plastix that I finally found the time to finally dive into).

Side "B" was born from the memories of never going to sleep and 'waking' with the sun, surrounded by friends ... the night you'd just had fuzzy and crystallized ... the thing that grounded your spinning minds: music ... before we all scattered our separate ways.

House music's greatest hit-makers? 

Quite possibly. Since the end of the 1980s, Kenny Dope and Louie Vega - given the Masters at Work name, so the story goes, by Todd Terry - have been releasing house and garage anthems with unbelievable regularity. There's 'The Ha Dance' - the track whose Trading Places sample gave ballroom its trademark Ha crash. There's 'Work', one of the most remixed and sampled tracks in dance music history. There's 'To Be In Love', one of the most perfect synergies of dance music and pop music ever made - and these are just the tip of the MAW iceberg, we've not even started on solo hits like Kenny Dope's 'The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind)' and 'No Hook', and side gigs like Kenlou.

You get the picture: these two could play nothing but their own material for two hours and still not even scratch the surface of their vast, influential and - most importantly - ridiculously fun discography. But ahead of a rare London show at Found's 51st State Festival (where they'll be joined by fellow vets Derrick Carter, Dennis Ferrer, David Morales and many more), we asked them to try. This is Masters at Work in the mix for FACT - sometimes all you need is what it says on the tin. 

51st State takes place on Saturday August 8 in London's Trent Park, and might well feature more house and garage royalty than any UK festival in history. For more information, head to 51ststatefestival.com

Hey, Gareth here, I'm a graphic designer who start designing for clubs, parties, and labels in the late 90s. Back then, mix CDs were the holy grail of both design and music. I loved them.

But I wasn't the only one, mix cds were the soundtracks of our nights, our days, our afterparties and lives, for everyone. Yet in today's internet age, the art form has been lost (or just changed) to 2-3 hour online mixes and streaming videos, which just don't create the same magic your CD collection did. Just 60 minutes of music and incredible artwork.

The Classic Mix CD Series celebrates these discs, their soundtrack, their box art and your memories. We hope you enjoy it.

About Gareth:
Digital creative type, gamer, music lover and occasional DJ. Currently living between Dubai & Seoul after setting sail from Sunderland in 2010. As a young designer, club and music culture was the driving force for his work, producing artwork for local club nights and record labels in the North East of England. In particular, DJ mix cds and their packaging were always his 'holy grail of design', especially those from Renaissance, Global Underground and Good Looking Records.
