1990, or was it 1991?  The first hour of this is probably more akin to what was played at the Warehouse in Leeds in those years, but the mix could have just as easily been called Ricky's or the Gallery or named after any other club in the North of England for that matter.  The Warehouse was the first club I went to though and its a tribute to how blown away I was as soon as I'd blagged my way in saying I'd lost my mates, even though I looked about 12.  Those nights, and Boy Wonder especially were very special indeed.

056 - Havin'It Classics vol. 2 mixed by Trevor Fung (1995)

Both parts of my set providing the soundtrack for the recent launch of a book by Kirk Field called Rave New World. I played either side of his appearance, and then edited them together at about 1 hour 23 minutes. As with all of my live mixes, there's a few clangers, and a few absolute genius transitions. I leave them all in to stay true to the original ethos of DJing where it's all about 'The Moment".

Social Criticism in Lauryn Hill's 'Doo Wop (That Thing)'
Lauryn Hill's song 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' is an empowerment anthem and a sharp social critique, released in 1998 as part of her acclaimed album 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'. The song addresses themes of self-respect, sexuality and the dangers of being carried away by appearances and materialism.
In the first verse, Hill speaks directly to women, warning them about the dangers of allowing themselves to be used by men who are only interested in 'that thing'. She criticizes the idea that women must conform to standards of beauty and behavior in order to be accepted or loved, mentioning 'hair weaves like Europeans' and 'fake nails done by Koreans' as examples of how women are pressured to conform to external standards. The artist also references religious and historical figures, such as Jezebel, to illustrate the consequences of straying from one's own principles and values.
The second verse is directed at men, criticizing those who prioritize material possessions and status over their responsibilities and relationships. Hill calls out toxic behaviors such as domestic violence and irresponsible fatherhood, and questions how these men can hope to succeed in life if they are not right on the inside. The song ends with a dialogue that reflects on the difference between love and being in love, suggesting that true love goes beyond the surface and accepts a person as they are. Welcome to Part 2 of the Hacienda special Word Is Love show where we continue to celebrate some of the finest Dance music that played on the Hacienda Dancefloor in Manchester, U.K. throughout the late 80's and into the 90's.

This time round there are remixes of New Order, Happy Monday's, Primal Scream and Sub Sub with tracks by Andrew Weatherall, Todd Terry, 808 State, K-Klass, Roland Clark and Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk including some familiar classic Floor Fillers you may recognise.

This second part of the Word Is Love show special focuses on House, Acid House, Electro and Techno with several deeper tracks and breaks.

It's a unique Hacienda experience covering a number of genre's showcasing the broad range of music that used to frequent this iconic club over the years.
