This year the Tour De France Grand Départ is in Copenhagen. The route is very close to Music For Dreams HQ, therefore we decided to put out a little EP to celebrate this event.

We asked a few MFD artists to do cover versions of electronic pioneers Kraftwerk from their incredible Tour De France Soundtracks album which was released in 2003.
Charlotte & Reinhard (from Rheinzand) have done a version of Vitamin.
Danish Duo Subnesia have done a modern funky take on the 1983 classic title track with Truck D on vocals.

The Swan & The Lake featuring Rosebud chose Aéro Dynamik for their version.
We think its a nice homage to the original and also a fantastic cover artwork by MSB Creations to finish off the release.

The elusive Danish DJ graces us with a nice little three-tracker of timeless Balearic adorned with horns from friend and jazz trumpeter Claus Højensgård. Mellow tropical flavours turn majestic on ‘The Man with the Red Face’ while pulsating rythms merge with vocal samples on the title track. ‘Greece 2000’ features Kenneth Bager in a seven-minute finale of purebred Balearica under nostalgic bends.

Canadian production wizard Frivolous, who’s nowadays based in Berlin, turns Felix Laband’s original into a funky but deep electronic groover, with a haunting, intriguing atmosphere that still owns some bliss moments.

Born and raised on a farm in the suburbs of Vancouver, Grades were always mediocre at best for young Daniel Gardner aka Frivolous, until one semester a mysterious new course emerged into the curriculum; Electronic Music Composition. Suddenly discovered, were honor roll grades, and a means to merge an imaginative young mind with over a decade of fiercely enforced classical piano training. In 1996, captivated by the unified dance floors and Detroit sounds, the 16-year-old embarked on a life-long love-affair with the loop and took his first DJ residency at a Vancouver afterhours. After two successfully directionless years studying electronics and design, and after dabbling with some independent releases, Daniel decided to put his pride aside and demo his accomplishments. A CD of incomplete works were sent out as an experiment to 5 of the most esthetically innovative labels in Germany, and received back were 3 requests to release it. The encouragement and new-found confidence led to the birth of the project FRIVOLOUS. Now with more than 40 releases and over a dozen 12′′s to his name, Frivolous has toured the globe playing an eclectic array of venues and festivals along the way. His live shows have been hailed for their energy, originality and ingenuity as he’s taken the stage next to some of the most respected names in the business. Never compromising the art of showman-ship, these spectacles feature live keyboards and vocals as well as the incorporation of his DIY aesthetic. Integrating homemade devices such as the “Frivolous Patented Electromagnetic knife”, the “Broken-Ruler Music Box” and the Double “Cable-Tub” Bass, his sets are injected with a sense of fantasy, imagination and personality scarcely found elsewhere in modern electronic dance music.

has the same UV index and the same amount of fresh air as a festival with perfect climatic conditions:
During its epic 10 minutes of play time, their highly melodic track “Elves of Karoo” grows just as big and
exciting as a full weekend on a dancefloor bathed in a generous amount of direct sunlight.
Furthermore, Seth Schwarz adds the solo track “Quando Rando” that is slower but just as compelling
and that reflects the classical composition skills of this producer in an intriguingly subliminal way. The
amount of great producers who contribute remixes for this EP lives up to the idea of a perfect festival,
as well – a festival for lovers of catchy yet sophisticated dance music, that is.

São Paulo’s Spaniol (@s_paniol) opens up the new year with the first 2021 release from The Gardens of Babylon: Suites do Amar (eng. Ocean Songs About Love). After a year of worldwide uncertainty, the multi-instrumental Brazilian draws from his own personal experiences to bring a 6-track mini album compiled of universal themes, familiar emotions, and fresh perspectives.

As the creator and resident of Colectivo Sonido Trópico of São Paulo, Spaniol is a staple of his city’s local scene. The collective’s transcendental parties have brought the likes of Rampue, Oceanvs Orientalus, Xique Xique, Holger Hecler, and more to the city center while also traversing the world from Tulum to Tokyo. As a lifelong musician, Spaniol’s introduction to electronic music evolved from a background in classical guitar and flute as something of a “happy accident” whilst in his teens. Good thing for us though, as this current sound draws from all that surrounds him and has been featured on labels like Sol Selectas while gracing the stages at Katerblau, Sysifos, Heart Ibiza, De Martkantine and Public Works amongst others.

With elements of Classical, flashes of Brazilian Pop, Jazz, Samba, Caimbó, combined with both analog and didital percussion, the sounds of Spaniol are narrative, edgy, and undeniably energetic; Suites do Amar being a perfect example. Created on a secluded family property on the veritable island paradise of Ilhabela, Suites do Amar is a narrative about loss and rebirth, familiarity and uncertainty, companionship and seclusion. It encapsulates what all of us have felt throughout the past year, written in the micro and personal but representative of a macro reality. The Lp kicks off with the poetic musing on love and forgiveness, Amar:Perdão before the Brazilian classical inspired Lundu De Santa Maria Da Tempestade represents the coming storm. At its halfway point, Algernoia Brasiliensis starts to lighten the atmosphere through the realization of colour and life – a yellow/purple flower only native to Ilhabela. Then, an ode to a trusted companion and loyal company, Nina (aka Spaniol’s beloved Border Collie) reminds us of life’s little pleasures. Papaya Azul then sees Spaniol team up with longtime friend Salvador Araguaya on the ode to all things blue jazz. Finally, after 6 months on the near entirely rainforest clad island, São Pedro welcomes both Spaniol and listeners back to the mainland and the familiar with a fresh perspective and open heart.

After a 2020 that saw releases from Anstascia, Carlita, Jacob Groening, Vander, as well as the second annual The Monastery Compilation, The Gardens of Babylon now welcomes Spaniol to its label family. With Suites do Amar, he reminds us that regardless of what comes our way, it’s just life. Storms can be weathered, what’s lost can be found, and the things we hold dear may be the simplest pleasures of them all.
