Audre Lorde said "Your silence will not protect you" and it is a sentiment I have always taken to heart. Yet in the days following the shooting in Orlando I found myself paralyzed by my sadness and wanting nothing more than to retreat from the world. Grief is an unpredictable beast and the truth is that the only way that I really know how to respond in moments like these is with art.  So I'm breaking my silence.

Songs often function like prayers for me and I look to them for both guidance and comfort. The week of the Orlando shooting I received the final mix of the album that I've been working on since February. I wrote the track Orlando in 2015 and recorded it this past winter. Originally it began as a poem inspired by the character in Virginia Woolf's novel by the same title. I wrote it whilst in Paris the week of Charlie Hebdo shooting.  At that time I needed to remind myself of the potential for transformation that can only come in our most vulnerable moments. I believe that when we feel totally stripped bare by sadness we are given a particular kind of opportunity to soften towards ourselves and see the pain as an invitation to be more present and awake. Orlando and the theme of rebirth feels as pertinent to me now as it did a year and a half ago when I wrote it. I mainly wrote it to soothe myself and so it is in that same spirit that I'm humbly offering it now.

Audre Lorde a dit  « votre silence ne vous protégera pas » et j’ai ce sentiment-là aussi depuis toujours dans mon coeur. Et pourtant les jours qui ont suivi la fusillade d’Orlando, je me suis sentie envahie d’une tristesse infinie avec une seule envie : me retirer du monde. Le chagrin est une bête imprévisible et la seule chose qui puisse me consoler dans des moments graves est l’art. Je vais donc rompre mon silence.

Les chansons sont souvent comme des prières pour moi et je recherche leur lecture pour me guider et me réconforter. La semaine de la fusillade j’ai reçu les mix finaux de l’album sur lequel je travaille depuis le mois de février. J’ai écrit cette chanson Orlando en 2015 et je l’ai enregistrée cet hiver. Au départ cela commençait par un poème inspiré par le personnage du roman de Virginia Woolf du même nom. Je l’ai écrit lorsque j’étais à Paris la semaine de l’attentat de Charlie Hebdo. A cet instant , j’ai eu besoin de me rappeler de la puissance des changements qui peuvent se produire lorsque l’on se sent extèmement vulnérable. Je suis convaincue que c’est dans ces moments ou l’on est totalement mis à nu par la tristesse que l’on peut réaliser que l’on se doit d’être plus indulgent envers nous mêmes et qu’il faut voir ces moments comme une invitation à s’éveiller et à vivre pleinement l’instant présent. Orlando et le thème de la renaissance sont toujours aussi actuels aujourd’hui qu’ il y a un an et demi. J’ai écrit cette chanson au départ pour me réconforter et c’est dans cet esprit que je vous l’offre humblement aujourd’hui.
