Mixes of the World: Borrowed Identity

Borrowed Identity's musical upbringing is best described as a smorgasbord of concurrent sonic templates. Rooted in Romania but nurtured in deep South Germany, a love of Romanian folk music, Moodymann and Snoop Dogg deem to be the basis of a pretty eclectic sound palette. Reaching beyond the typical four four stratosphere and into the domain of what he describes as "hard banging techno, cheesy pop music, funky disco and experimental noise" he’s been releasing a fleet of material since he jumped into the scene back in 2012. In truth, you only need to look to labels like Mistress Recordings (DVS1's self-operated imprint), Home Taping and most notably, Ostgut Ton, to hear his flourishing cultivated style, but it's his newly coined live show that he’ll be presenting to us next month aims to really showcase his experimental taste and musical dynamism. 

Set to grace our Martin Audio rig on Saturday 7th February alongside Kyle Hall, Funkineven and K15, the 24 year old producer has kindly offered to answer a few probing questions on his musical journey and illustrate exactly what he means by ‘never limiting himself to one genre’ by putting together an exclusive promo mix…

K-LONE’s Cape Cira LP is one of the prettiest records you’ll hear all year in techno or any other genre. The Wisdom Teeth boss created a verdant sonic world on that album, one where rippling beats came drenched in sun-dappled atmospheres and melodies that evoked palm trees swaying in a breeze. On this exclusive mix, @k-lone93 lets us in on some of the music that inspired the record. The mix’s first half largely eschews dancefloor pulses in favour of dreamy flushes of sound - while there are some gently danceable numbers in here from the likes of DJ Python and Duckett, the entries around them emphasise new-age-inspired textures in a manner that draws a clear line to Cape Cira. We then enter a territory of coy techno and micro-house throbs, one where Jan Jelinek’s ‘Rock In The Video Age’ sets the tone, before blissing out with pure ambiences at the mix’s close. 

"This mix is a selection of cuts from my favourite albums I was listening to around the time of writing Cape Cira, mostly the sort of stuff for listening to at home rather than the club. In order to celebrate plastic/vibes 1-year anniversary, we are handing to you on a silver platter one of the finest and most consistent house dj in the game: Borrowed Identity. Romanian native Chris first earned his stripes as a hip-hop producer at the age of 13 before being prettily brainwashed by techno waves in his late teenage years. His productions are undoubtedly reminiscent of timeless 90s house sounds from Larry Heard, Robert Hood or Moodymann, to name but a few. He is not the kind of artist you could easily pigeonhole as his musical upbringing has been filled with a smorgasbord of different genres. As a versatile chameleon, his sets never look alike, and you can rationally expect the unexpected, from groovy house and tasteful disco to dynamic techno and anything in between. He has now been playing worldwide for more than 10 years in the greatest clubs (fabric, Panorama Bar or Concrete), and has left his mark on the most prestigious dance labels (Mistress Recordings, Ostgut Ton or Quintessentials). To recap, he is merely one of the most talented artist around at the moment, but also a genuinely and unpretentiously music enthusiast.

His mix totally does way more than credit to our birthday as he stupendously combines insatiable jams from Bobby Analog, Cody Currie or Four Tet. Not everybody understands house music but you will definitely feel the vibes of this one deep down in your heart.

Interestingly inheriting from a cross-cultural heritage between her native Mexican roots and her mature Spanish upbringing, Lis Sarroca falls into the wave of young local artists who vividly embodies a captivating, forceful and underground house. As a passionate digger endowed with both an inflexible attention to detail and exquisite tastes, her musical undertakings totally exude freshness, inventiveness and aptness. Back in 2013, she rationally felt drawn to music production and sound engineering, so that putting production theory into practice will have taken about 3 years, but will have worth the wait. Consequently, in 2016, she made her debuts and quickly found her hallmark in tech house vibes, before recently experimenting and daringly moving into sophisticated deep house spheres. Given the quality of her recent releases (Hot Haus, House Cookin’ and Mobilee), no wonder she has promptly been getting warm support from big house names like Demuja, Disclosure or The Black Madonna. Consistently striving hard to achieve flawless quality both in her productions and mixes trivially led her play in Spain’s best parties (Nitsa or Brunch in the Park) as well as overseas. 

Be mentally prepared; this is the kind of mix you’re going to come back to again and again. Lis meticulously delivers a catchy house mix tainted with acid notes from DJ Haus, DMX Krew or V.I.C.A.R.I. Expect her to bring the vibes through an obsessive deal of warm, riveting and glowing grooves.

Esteban Adame is not your daily average bedroom dj but a seasoned and respected producer who has been in the game for more than 20 years now, and has already stroked the decks of the most prestigious clubs (Moog, fabric or Berghain). Still doesn’t ring a bell? Remember the spotless podcast he recorded for Resident Advisor two years ago, which made everyone unanimously agree on his talent including Spencer Parker and Byron The Aquarius. Hailing from the strong Latino community of East Los Angeles, he began his career playing in local backyard parties before expeditiously establishing influential and lasting connexions with the Motor City. 2004 was a watershed year when his phone abruptly rang with “Mad” Mike Banks from Underground Resistance (UR) on the line asking him to lend a helping hand to Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Los Hermanos live acts as a keyboardist. His musical imprint brilliantly oscillates between jazz, latin, house and techno jams with specific know-how. You might also know him as “Frequencia”, the alias under which he indulges in his darker side producing delicious fast-banging techno, or as half of the smoking-hot “El Coyote” project with his longstanding UR mate DJ DEX / Nomadico.

People, listen very carefully; this is house music done very properly. During fifty minutes, Esteban immerges ourselves in a gripping and nostalgic trip, digging timeless 90s house vibes from Rick Wade, Kerri Chandler or Jovonn. His set definitely corroborates that house music will never die.

Low Tape. As a producer, he has been unbelievably unstoppable lately, building a solid catalogue of underrated jams. First embracing the lo-fi house wave 5 years ago, his current sound has evolved into a leftfield lo-fi/electro crowned with a dusty acid signature. Always on a quest to push boundaries and deliver forward-thinking beats, he has his very own secret formula that makes his interpretation of dance music truly unique. No surprise that his productions have rapidly been appraised by top labels such as Nerang Recordings or Neoviolence.

As usual, his mix magically brings us in a mind-altering and hypnotic trip filled with nostalgia and intensity. The well-crafted vibes from Trinidadian Deep, Gemini or Daisy Glow are aiming to do colossal damage on both sweaty dance-floors and early night build-ups. It all started out when he first heard house music at the age of 10. Being exposed to the eclectic universe of electronic music at such a young age, the prodigy from Israel quickly had the opportunity to develop his own perception of dance music and be involved locally in the scene. As soon as he reached the age of majority, he released his two first vinyls and promptly gained huge approval by techno representatives Sven Väth and Magda. Back in 2012, he started to officially produce under “Mike Sharon” cooking up the timeless “I Feel You EP” bomb we have been voraciously listening to at plastic/vibes. Later in the same year, he co-founded his own record label Ultra Knites with his like-minded UK-based pal Sem Marini. The mission has been crystal-clear since day 1: promoting artists that bring true chord-driven and authentic underground deep house & garage sounds. Today, Mike keeps exploring house beats and releasing fresh material on top labels such as Local Talk Records, Traxx Underground or Plastik People. His subtle raw house style has been getting warm support from house masters Kerri Chandler and Move D, among any others.

Stop what you are doing people; Mike has supplied us with an hour of inspirational and massive deep house jams, flowing effortlessly from one track to another. His atemporal style brings delightful vibes from Ultra Knites, Lucio Agustin and Thomas Wood. Geez, the man never disappoints.
