A mix compiled entirely of Australian-based artists, Marcus notes: "It's likely that many of these artists do not know each other personally, so it's interesting to think that there isn't really an ambient "scene" in Australia. But yet, there is still some similarity to our output.”

A self-described "record digging psychopath," Eric Cloutier’s (@cloutier) standards are representative of the pre-social media craze and arguably the old adage of letting music speak for itself. Cloutier’s twenty-plus year commitment has been built upon his integrity as a DJ and authority as a selector. His reputation as an unequivocal, dexterous force is increasingly becoming one of note. a. My name is Ian Baxter and I produce music as DJ Birdbath and am currently based in the sunny top of New Zealand's south island.

q. is there a story behind the mix?
Not as such, I just tried to go with my first impulse for the song choice.

q. what's the best way to enjoy your mix?
I reckon it's best enjoyed in a comfy place with some headphones maybe on a bus or train.

q. describe a favorite object in your living room...
Definitely the pile of comfy pillows a friend made covers for from an old wall hanging. I've been making lots of music and this mix whilst nestled amongst them.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
I'm always working on bits of music and samples and am very excited for my EP to come out on APPX: ( @appendixfiles ) on the 24th of March.

Jo Johnson has been releasing music and organising events since the early 90s. She is a regular performer at Freerotation festival in the UK, and organises electronic music events with Bleep43 in London. Her debut solo album, Weaving, was released on Further Records in 2014 and has been described as a modern classic.  Her latest solo release, The Wave Ahead, came out earlier this year on Brooklyn-based label, Mysteries of the Deep. Jo also collaborates with pianist and composer, Hilary Robinson, and they have a live album, Session One, on 9128.live (a sub-label of A Strangely Isolated Place).

“It's been a pleasure to spend time listening to someone else’s music rather than my own! I've been writing and playing out much more this year, which has been amazing, but it's not left as much time for listening, so it's been refreshing and inspiring to delve into some of the great music that's been coming out recently. It is a big honour to feature the very talented @syberkid for our ninth Herbarium Episode. With her organic and trippy sound, she makes the perfect match for our series.
The artist chose one of the oldest ferns for her mix, Pteridium Aquilinum. There are fossil records for this plant which are over 55 million years old.
It’s native in the U.K., the place where Sybil is based. She says '[it] looks so prehistoric & Jurassic, I love it.'

It is wonderful how Sybil integrates the mystic yet ancient vibe of this plant into her mix. It describes the complex form and the magic which comes with the age of its existence on earth very well. There are moments in which one can imagine to really communicate with this inspiring plant and feel the atmosphere around it in our forests.

Jo Johnson’s explorations in sound have ranged from free-form punk with Huggy Bear in the 90s, to underground techno in the 00s, and, for the last decade, deeply expressive electronic minimalism that pays tribute to the many women who pioneered this genre. She has released with respected labels including Further Records and Mysteries of the Deep in the US and Frequency Domain and Castles in Space in the UK. Her latest project, Alterations, is a 'slow' album that she is recording and self-releasing track-by-track throughout 2025. 

For the fourth edition of Waves, Jo Johnson presents a mix of absolute celestial beauty, building delicately with deep and lush ambiance into a trip of interstellar melodies, this is the perfect way to start your week off right.
