A rare mix from the originator of Techno, Juan Atkins, as part of the celebration of three decades of Tresor, the German nightclub, label, and institution.

Recorded at the Tresor club in Berlin at the beginning of 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic turned the world upside-down, the mix spans the full spectrum of sub-genres that Techno has evolved into from its beginnings with Juan and his peers in 1980s Detroit. As such the mix is true testament to the genre from one of its founding fathers.

Juan’s classic track I Love You features on the forthcoming Tresor 30 compilation - 52 tracks of classics and exclusive commissions that map the flight path of Techno from the pioneers to the producers of today and tomorrow. This alongside the recent reissue of the seminal 3MB record Juan made alongside Moritz Von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann perfectly encapsulates the long-lasting connection between Juan Atkins and Tresor, between Detroit and Berlin.

This is the recording of my DJ set at Berghain on sunday morning 6th of February 2011, between 8 and 12am. Marcel Dettmann is a rarity in electronic music. His precocious disdain for rules has been one of the key ingredients for a decades-spanning arc that started sometime around the fall of the Berlin Wall (with early exposure to post-punk, industrial and synth pop) and continues to this day. His leitmotif is instantly recognisable, expertly layered, playfully syncopated, and though his influence is everywhere, no one quite manages to copy his pioneering sound. His formative influences surface frequently, serious atonal arrangements that follow the logic of EBM descending into a flurry of protean melodies; maybe this versatility is why, for a long time now, Dettmann’s sound has been so synonymous with a city in flux. Our latest MIXED BY comes from another steed in https://soundcloud.com/ostgutton-official's stable of veritable techno titans, Berlin by way of New York producer Function (Dave Sumner). With over 20 years of productions under his belt—from the seminal uncredited recordings as Richard Harvey (as found on Richie Hawtin's Decks, EFX & 909 CD) and his highly productive partnership with Regis as Sandwell District to his current collection of recordings as Function, his brand of unflinching techno has driven endless parties at Berghain into serious overtime.

The mix comes courtesy of the recently deceased Great American Techno Festival, which celebrated its fifth and final edition last month. This 100 minute excerpt of Function's four hour appearance features tracks from well over two dozen of techno's top producers mixed live on three CDJs, like Cassigrain, John Tejada, Mark Broom, Joey Beltram and many more. It also spotlights the TR-909 drum machine that Function has started to incorporate into his DJ sets the past year.

Before he took to the stage, Function joked that he needed to crank up the tempo of his set higher than he'd initially planned. It was easy to understand why: he was following AX&P (Adam X and Perc), who'd just battered the crowd with two hours of industrial techno. Armed with, among other things, a TR-909, a laptop, a couple of controllers and a Rane mixer, Function wasn't about to be outdone. He stepped up and delivered a 135 BPM masterclass.

Time sure does fly when you’re having fun, and so it is that we’ve already raced up to podcast number 200. We’ve managed to call upon a suitably large name for the honour; someone who has very much shaped the techno scene over the course of the last 20 years and continues to excite people every time he plays. That man is Surgeon. As a performer, Birmingham’s Anthony Childs was one of the first men to embrace and exploit the possibilities of Ableton Live and Final Scratch. His mastery of that technology made his sets even more improvised and innovative, and over the years he has never compromised his vision. He plays with a sense of devastation and destruction that explores the very outer edges of what is possible, while always keeping the dance floor absolutely locked in. It’s been the same since he founded his hometown’s first techno club, House of God, at the start of the 90s. 

As a producer—whether solo or in celebrated collaborations with Regis as British Murder Boys or Ben Sims as Frequency 7—he seems to be getting better with age. Right from his first EP on Karl O’Connor’s Downwards in 1994, surgeon has had a hard hitting, linear style that remains to this day. Recent years saw him return to a primitive rave style and incorporate the gritty industrial influences of his youth. But in 2018 he evolved again and served up what many consider to be his best album in years. Luminosity Device features a more rhythmic, playful sense of drum programming next to his meticulously crafted synths and enthralling sense of urgency and future paranoia. The nuance in his tracks is now as intriguing as the visceral power of the kicks, and it all adds up to an album that works as well on headphones, at home, as it does on the dance floor. It’s proper techno by a proper techno head. 

And so is the mix he has put together for us. Over 1 hour 45 minutes, the man calls upon plenty of pivotal names from Juan Atkins and Oscar Mulero to Donato Dozzy and James Ruskin. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way, so that zoned out passages of dubbed out drums are followed by intergalactic space battles and moments of synth laden intensity. It’s a testament to Surgeon’s skills that he can take you to such far ranging corners of the techno world without ever getting lost.
