Nocturne "Pianoday 2021"

Submitted to the SA Recordings Recompose Competition in October, 2020. This is my re-imagining of Alev Lenz’s song 'Laura' from her 2019 album ‘3’... featuring just two of the words from the original lyrics.

The instruments are:
accordion (ancient/very broken)
alto saxophone
tenor saxophone
flute
voice

I recorded several takes of each instrument, and I accidentally captured myself singing/humming along to Alev Lenz's original recording... just the lyrics 'seeking' and 'Laura'. So I focused this recomposition around those two words. The word 'seeking' makes its way from start to finish, and the name 'Laura' surfaces at the very end.

Data for the 60-second audio file was collected on Oct. 19, 2020, during an in-flight checkout of the Perseverance rover's camera and microphone system on the journey to Mars. The subdued whirring is from the rover's heat rejection fluid pump.
