He's the founding father of one of the biggest and most relevant groups for electronic music-diggers, where people can dive into the beauty of hidden gems, from the early days of House Music up to the present. But Paul Wise, better know under his artist moniker Placid, not only runs We're Going Deep, the group, he's also founded a label with the same name, on which he puts out music that's deep and (partly) has an Acid twist, a preference Paul basically has grown up with as he's witnessed the beginnings of House Music in the UK and became officially a DJ in 1990, right after the Second Summer of Love. Ever since the Bristol-based artist has dedicated himself to the music and poured his love into it. For Torture the Artist Placid put together the latest art:cast, of course mixed and recorded on two Technics 1210MK2 on a Saturday afternoon and spoke about the We're Going Deep-group, his early days in the scene, how he puts together the V/A EPs on the label, the reason why he has never produced music on his own and much more.

For the next in our Off The Record mix series we invited DJ, radio host and music consultant Sam Don or known to his close friends and family, Sam Donnison. Sam is a DJ's DJ, having proved himself and the world over as a man of many styles, tempo and moods. Having shared the airwaves with highly regarded talent like Danilo Plessow aka MCDE and constructed mind soothing mixes for podcasts like Mr Bongo its quite hard to pin point what direction Sam will go in a set. This also shows the sign of a true digger and if Off The Record knows anything its deep diggers. This digging helped Sam curate one of the most captivating compilation series' to come out this year in our opinion; "For The Love Of You", a journey through Lover's Rock across two brilliant volumes on the ever amazing Athens Of The North. For this mix Sam has tapped into a deep dig of fun yet raw house numbers, stemming with vocals, hypnotic acid, heavenly kicks and cunning blends throughout. Resident at the longest running and best acid house night I Love Acid, you can catch him playing at Were Going Deep parties in his hometown of Bristol and as part of Depth Perception (a collective of music obsessives playing deep electronic music across multiple genres). Placid's gigging biography has taken him to Detroit, New York, Berlin, France, Spain, Belgium and Holland as well as the Glastonbury and BLOC music festivals. 

Reputed to be the owner of one of the world's most encompassing collections of Acid House, Placid is a walking acid-house encyclopaedia who can always be trusted to dig deep into his records crate to bring you a pure vinyl set of the absolute best of Acid House, Detroit Techno, Deep House, Electro and Chicago House. He currently has a 15k strong group dedicated to the deeper sounds on facebook as Were Going Deep and his label of the same name just recently dropped their 11th release.

Mike Grant is a true Detroit dance music originator. From his beginnings as a DJ in the early 80s, Mike has been a part of many classic institutions while still managing to walk a unique path. Whether it was one of the first DJs to have their mixes played for dancers on TV (WGPR’s The Scene), the first American DJ to secure a residency at the world-famous Tresor Club in Berlin, one of Detroit’s first radio mix show DJs as part of the “Street Beat” crew, included in the Detroit Historical Museum’s exhibit “Techno: Detroit’s Gift to the World,” or running the Metroplex label and shop, the diversity and quality of his output allow him to stand out.

As founder of the legendary Moods & Grooves record label, Mike has released music from some of the biggest and best names in deep house while also breaking fresh young artists into the scene. Mike’s music productions run the gamut of styles, making classic techno for Metroplex and his End-to-End label under the Black Noise moniker, and soulful deep house under his name. He also started the Cool Peepl project as a way for him to try his hand at orchestrating jam sessions between new and established Detroit musicians to create a more organic vibe. The results so far include a jazzy cover of the Detroit classic “Sharevari” and his original funky broken beat production “Free,” with more to come.

Mike perfected his DJ skills in some of Detroit's significant club venues/events: The Downstairs Pub, Studio 54, Music Institute, L’uomo, Cheeks, Motor Lounge, and the inaugural Detroit Electronic Music Festival. But in 1985, he committed to join the Army, unaware of the doors that would eventually open. While in the military, Mike continued to DJ on the base and in Seattle, where he introduced the sounds of Detroit techno to the unsuspecting West Coast, garnering a well-earned new audience. He wanted to stay involved in music and did promotional work for Metroplex Records. Mike gave the record “Technicolor” to an associate of Sir Mix-a-Lot who sampled it for the huge hit “Baby Got Back.” Additionally, Grant applied his technical talents in managing the Kandahar Gospel ministry while deployed for a year to Afghanistan, earning the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

While his work could easily take up a lifetime, Mike accomplished much while dedicating a large part of the 1980s and 90s to military service. Mike Grant’s dedication to the art form and self-discipline has created quite a legacy, and he continues to push forward to keep enriching that legacy.

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.
