Maai proudly presents a split EP featuring two distinguished Barcelona based talents. On the A side, the Peruvian trio of JJ Beteta, Alonso Bauer and Stefan Cukic delivers a dynamic array of tracks. "Layers" kicks off with an energetic blend of dusty breaks, setting the vibe for the EP. Following this, "Go The Data" takes over with its driving acid bassline, strong rhythm, for a dark and hypnotic vibe. The trio wraps up their side with "Wonky Afthermath," a subtle yet funky combination of deep, groovy elements and breaks that keeps the energy flowing.

On the B side, Canarian artist Javier Carballo, performing under his Look Perry alias, offers a captivating contrast. Since 1995, Uruguay’s Two Phase U has been crafting beats that blend classic hardware-driven textures with contemporary dancefloor sensibilities. His latest offering, the Face Five EP on System Error’s ERROR100 series, showcases his versatility, delivering tracks primed for any dancefloor moment.

The A2 track, "Comprando" (Spanish for "buying"), is a deep, techy groover with a subtle, hypnotic acid streak. From the start, a tight rhythm section exudes classic hardware warmth, while the bassline’s understated funk anchors the groove, allowing the acid line to subtly weave into the mix.

What makes "Comprando" effective is its restraint. The Acid elements enhance rather than dominate, creating an engaging push-and-pull dynamic. Gradual layers of percussion and shimmering textures keep the listener locked in, making it equally suited for peak-time club energy or intimate late-night sessions.

The demo for the title track happened fast. Like, one-day fast. A few days before Gaplife’s launch at Loop51, Aron sat down to make ‘something fun’, no big plan. Just chasing a good feeling. He’d been deep in Italo house that week: bright chords, happy grooves, the kind of stuff that makes you grin without realising it. So he thought, alright, let’s try a “hands-up” track.

And in a single session, “Johnny Walks” came together. Multiple sections, builds, breakdowns, and then in that final stretch…the strings, the lift, the everything-is-right-in-the-world moment. We quickly used it as the backing track for the Loop51 poster because it was exactly that energy: positive, open, communal.

By that point, Aron already had “Night at Hugh” and “Pussy” waiting to be tested. Both were born from the same mindset: keep it simple, keep it moving. He’d been making more melodic, layered tracks and wanted to tap into that pure, four-to-the-floor groove.

“Night At Hugh” samples this old Hugh Hefner interview about fearlessness; it’s weirdly inspiring in context. And “Pussy”... well, that one’s built around a random vocal sample. No extravagant explanation, just one of those happy studio moments that slaps.

Together, these three tracks show Aron in flow mode: no overthinking, just instinct and energy. Melodic but club-ready, euphoric yet grounded. Easy to drop in a set, but also something you’ll catch yourself replaying just for the mood.

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'.
