Beloved Berlin imprint Kizen Records expands its 2025 account with another long player, this time sliding into the slow burn of dub. Lunar Cycles is the latest chapter in the ever-expanding catalog of Lithuanian producer Tadeuš Jatkevič, better known as Akmuo, whose recent years have been a steady drift through every shade of delay, echo, and negative space. His new album doesn’t chase reinvention so much as deepen the craft. It moves like someone walking familiar streets at a different hour, recognizing the contours while noticing new colors in the shadows. Across ten tracks, Akmuo shifts tempo and density yet holds the same suspended atmosphere, letting each piece behave like a different facet of the same mineral. The result feels almost didactic in the best way, a primer on how dub can stretch across forms without losing its pulse.

Our premiere today, Life, is part of the album’s closing pair alongside Lunar 2. It’s a fast mover on paper, deep in the 140s, yet carries itself with a softness that defies the number. Two dub chords orbit each other in slow rotation, drifting in and out of alignment while the four to the floor anchors their dance. Percussion gathers in small increments, never announcing a shift yet constantly nudging the track forward. The background hiss blurs the edges, turning the whole thing into a kind of illuminated fog. It’s a fitting endpoint: energetic, restrained, and quietly luminous. 

Lunar Cycles arrives November 28 on cassette and digital formats.

PREMIERE: Akmuo - Life [Kizen Records]

Private Press are back on Sungate in style, as they have us used to.

This stunning 4-tracker shows us an always advancing craft that the Polish duo are capable of. Ever present is their knack for euphoria, for meticulous drumwork, and their ability to mix-match equal pairings of colour and abrasiveness. Paired effectivity on the broken-beat realms of "Mud Break" and "Power Chord" meet solid groove construction on the 4-to-the-floor torrents of the aptly titled "Sub Soldier" and "Vulcan Mind Probe"

However, we sense throughout a notch up in fine detail, a heightened understanding of club pressure, and a deeper outlook into pushing forward the boundaries of breakbeat-continuum styles. We've always expected them to go upwards, we were just never certain of how high their ceiling was, or if one does actually exist.

The term annex typically describes a structure joined to a main building, offering extra space or function. In this spirit, Tresor Records revives the ANNEX series with a new end-of-year collection that serves as an extension of the label and club’s output, adding to the creative life that has unfolded within Köpenicker Str. 70 over the past years.

Since the club moved in 2007, the Kraftwerk complex has been repurposed from its original use as a power station to fulfil multiple functions that bring people together to collaborate and congregate: Office, venue, club, exhibition space, and home to the Berlin Atonal festival, the Tresor Foundation, and the Academy of Subcultural Understanding. With the arrival of the Hard Wax record shop in 2023, the building now offers another way for the like-minded to come together and to share ideas in a common space.

ANNEX echoes the many roles of the building by fostering introduction, connection, and creation: all of the music within was created by individuals directly linked to Tresor: from club staff and residents to Hard Wax employees and long-time friends.

Across 28 tracks, the compilation unites artists from various backgrounds and generations, some collaborating for the first time, creating a moment in motion as Tresor heads into a new year.

At midnight, on March 13th 1991, a basement door opened at Leipziger Strasse 126, Berlin. Through this door, many passed, on their way to defining new terrains in electronic music. There they found a dance floor in the vaults of a closed-down department store, with a unique sound bound to dense fog, building night after night a history that was also a vision of the future. 

This history has seen in Jeff Mills’ first sets on three turntables, Underground Resistance's first live appearances in Europe, grandiose Tresor Park parties, to various chapters of the Loveparade with Sven Väth in the 90s and since then countless generation-spanning parties. These moments represent the highlights of infinite personal clubbing experiences. It is the manifestation of the Berlin spirit, emerging from its considerable strife. This history is not without its complications - from temporary closure by the authorities and several raids in the early years to closure and demolition of the old location in 2005. What followed was years of wandering in exile and, finally, resurrection in the new home in Kraftwerk Berlin.

These stories, conversations and shared experiences within our walls forge a resilience that drives towards a shared ideal, the Tresor sound: community, resistance, and the world to come. This was observed in the newly re-unified German youth, who danced and celebrated together from the club’s inception, and into the present day through ongoing community work in Detroit. 

Tresor Records was founded in the same year and began to serve as a platform for exporting the new sounds associated with Tresor all around the world. Emergent musicians from Michigan, such as Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance and Drexciya, were pivotal in shaping these early years. Their visits to Berlin would kick-start dialogue between the youth movement in Europe and these musicians. This story is one of friendship and community-building, inextricably linked with cities like Detroit, Birmingham or Edinburgh, where like-minded friends built something truly special, where revelatory rhythms soundtrack decaying industry in corrupted metropoles. 

Tresor Records has been the fertile soil for dozens upon dozens of creative minds, from the very luminaries of the scene who developed electronic music over the last three decades through to contemporary protagonists who are currently defining the sound of the future -  A more than 300 strong catalogue displays an unmistakable identity - the Tresor spirit.

To those that have danced before, and to those that will dance in the future: the light at the end of the long Tresor tunnel is a signal. A flicker amidst the fog. This is our future. This is our place.
