Dark Entries is honored to release a 4-track EP by Swiss musician Carlos Perón, founding member of Yello. Carlos was born in 1952 in Zurich and began collecting music at a young age. Inspired after attending a concert of Karlheinz Stockhausen in the 1960s, he began to compose Musique Concrete pieces using a 4-track reel to reel and found sounds. In 1979 Perón founded the trio Yello with musician Boris Blank and vocalist Dieter Meier. Yello released their first album in 1980 and the following year Carlos released his first solo album ‘Impersonator’. In 1983 Carlos left Yello in order to pursue a solo career and released the soundtrack to “Die Schwarze Spinne" and 1984 his second solo album “Nothing Is True; Everything Is Permitted”. In 1988, Belgian label LD Records released a 4-song EP of instrumental tracks from 1984 that predated, influenced and became staples in the New Beat scene.

“Dirty Songs” is a collection of songs from Carlos Perón recorded between 1980 and 1986. The recordings were made with the core set up of an ARP 2600, Roland’s Drumatix, TB-303 and TR-808. “Nothing Is True; Everything Is Permitted (Instrumental)” recorded in 1984 is a slow burner with dark, gloomy atmospherics, presented here in an extended version with a bonus intro. The song was inspired by William S. Borroughs’ “Naked Lunch” and paints a bleak futuristic landscape.  “Breaking In (Instrumental)”, from 1984, is a crossover of electronic body music and pitched down Chicago acid house featuring overplayed snares by hand though an Ovomaltine Box. Originally featured on the soundtrack for “Die Schwarze Spinne”, the song is about breaking into a large pharmaceutical company to steal drugs. On the B-side is “A Dirty Song (Instrumental)”, originally recorded in 1986 and released by Play It Again Sam in 1988. The song uses one of the earliest Roland SH synthesizers, the SH-1 A, as a solo instrument and is strikingly aggressive with percussive rhythms. “Et” was recorded in 1980 on a 4-track and later and remixed to 8-tracks in 1984 for the “Frigorex” EP, which is where this extended version comes from. Featuring eerie, cut up vocals and Dadaist lyrics by Isa Nogara atop a proto-Techno beat.

All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket features a never before seen black and white photo of Carlos taken in 1988. Each album includes an double-­sided postcard featuring the cover art from the “Frigorex” EP. Prepare to make your own movie to the Swiss John Carpenter soundtrack vibes of Carlos Perón.

Now in its second decade, with a steady stream of the most forward thinking and cutting edge techno productions, Drumcode has one of the biggest selections of releases from industry heavy hitters, whilst not forgetting its future by bringing the newest talented producers into the limelight, where Layton Giordani is now a name firmly within that line up.

The New York born, but now EU based producer first had recognition back in 2014, and his debut release came via Drumcode with his track “Rivington” on the A-Sides Vol5 compilation in 2016. 

Consisting of 12 original tracks, the album packs a punch when it comes to no-nonsense techno. Successfully weaving relentless drums and catchy vocal hooks into a selection of thick, brooding, atmospheric tracks.

"A Broken Clock Is Right Twice A Day" EP is comprised of 7 tracks recorded in Kazan and Moscow during various sessions. Some of them go back as early as 2014 and everything is composed on two 8-track samplers. 

Alina Izolenta and Kamil Ea were born in the USSR, so the origin of the acronym PTU is embedded in everyday life of a country which no longer exists. The duo spent their childhood in Siberia and on Volga, and their salad days in music schools and early clubs of their respective home cities. 

Back then accessing the internet was only possible via pre-paid cards that came in envelopes. Music — via pirate CDs and endlessly slow mp3 downloads. Friendships would stem from copying music from hard drive to hard drive. The name PTU came to life in the middle of 00s, in a rented apartment, literally the last building in some steet on the outskirts, over impromptu synth sessions with friends.

When Tresor founder Dimitri Hegemann stumbled into a former bank vault in East Berlin on March 13th 1991, he had little idea that the
space he had unlocked would fast become one of Berlin's most influential and enduring techno clubs. "We didn't know what would
happen 10 months later," he says. "We signed a lease for a year. Which eventually got renewed for another three months, and another
three months…”

As Tresor celebrates its 25th anniversary with this work of artists from the US, Germany, China, France, Austria, Italy and the UK, it is
worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed Detroit techno – economic neglect and broken industry – were mirrored by
the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification East Berlin, where techno found new, vigorous expression.

Today, though the boom and bust of globalised capitalism has filled the void that followed the Berlin Wall, and techno has become a
worldwide industry, we face a new political chapter, one defined by populism, nationalism and mistrust. Contemporary creatives should
take inspiration from Tresor's story, an extraordinary experiment born from improvisation, resourcefulness and social neglect that
uplifted the spirits of inner city communities for a quarter-century.

This record marks the spirit of those 25 years of creativity, a paean to the psychedelic music of Dimitri’s youth. From the signature
magnetic soundscapes of Vainqueur to the dark textures of upcoming Being producer Shao; from Jon Hassell’s slow epicurean volutes,
to the ritual auras of Marcelus and Claudia Anderson’s contributions; from the dub-infused pioneering programming of Juan Atkins and
Moritz von Oswald, to Mønic’s enthralling cadences, it represents some of the old and new names that continually epitomise Tresor's
perennial spirit of ingenuity. “We were space pioneers," says Dimitri.

The East Berlin of 1991 may have disappeared to gentrification, with Tresor's lonely vanguard joined by an army of venues catering to an
international array of clubbers benefiting from low cost travel, many of whom settle in the city for good. Berlin is Europe's economic
engine, headquarters to global industry and sole traders alike, where Polish, Kurdish and English are as likely to be spoken as German.
That range of influences is felt in all areas of life, not least in the city's music.

"Without Tresor, Berlin would not be what it is today," concludes Dimitri. "Even though it sounds a bit pretentious, it is true. Tresor was
the prototype for an extraordinary club. It was only possible as a combination of the right time, the right place, the right content and
determined people."

This new edition on the everlasting Tresor Records catalogue marks the return of Pacou, more than five years after the release of his last full EP, Sense.

Three recently produced tracks in the true sound that defines the work of the German techno expert, meet a remix of ‘A Texture’. Initially released on his 1998 Symbolic Language album, ‘A Texture’ is a distinctive interlude, so supreme that it remains a Tresor favorite.

After two hugely successful outings on Distant Hawaii, Hidden Spheres cruises into Lobster Theremin waters with four sun soaked and heart meltingly infectious slices of his trademark soothing and late night house. 

EP opener ‘It Ain’t Easy’ sets the mood in a deeply meditative style. Rolling and natural drum patterns intertwine with playful melodies and soothing vocals, slowly shifting the sand across the beach as the sun slides over the horizon.

‘IshOnSax’ takes its lead from the windy city, a love story to 90s Chicago house, featuring some of the most contagious saxophone ever laid to wax courtesy of Ishmael. As the evening settles in and the office lights grow dim, the neon and intrigue of the night take hold.

The B-side kicks into gear with ‘The Feels’ an understated and raw house number that wears its heart on its chest. As a new dawn breaks the urgency of life stirs once again, sound-tracked by a never-ending rollercoaster of emotion that blankets the earth. 

Closing out the release is ‘It’s Gonna Last’ a melting pot of swirling sounds, field recordings and playful drum programming. A street performer takes their final bow as hoards of busy humans hurry to their next meeting spot.

"When you go to your stereo and turn on the tunes and all is working well with the speaker wire, then the sound is sweet, crisp and clear. You hear what the artist and producer intended for you to hear — and it’s a good and pleasant thing. 

However, if your speaker wire has a short in it, if it’s frazzled by a fray, then things might not go so well, and a clear connection could be lost. 

There are moments when that frayed wire may be in the perfectly placed position to still allow really solid sound to pass through. In that moment, the music is coming through loud and clear and you get to enjoy the groove. 

But then something shifts — even just a little, and suddenly that worn wire produces static (and maybe even sparks). The music’s still there, but with it is another competing noise — a sharp and crepitating noise — a noise that’s taken something pleasant and made it painful. 

All of a sudden something shifts again, and everything has gone from simple static to overwhelming and excruciating white noise. In the chaotic cacophony you find yourself reaching for the volume control in order to mute the mess because it hurts. 

Then things shift once more and the frayed wire is now in a position where nothing’s getting through. The connection has been lost and all is silent. The stereo itself is still making a melody, but that melody is trapped inside the machine and unknown to anyone on the outside."

At midnight, on March 13th 1991, a basement door opened at Leipziger Strasse 126, Berlin. Through this door, many passed, on their way to defining new terrains in electronic music. There they found a dance floor in the vaults of a closed-down department store, with a unique sound bound to dense fog, building night after night a history that was also a vision of the future. 

This history has seen in Jeff Mills’ first sets on three turntables, Underground Resistance's first live appearances in Europe, grandiose Tresor Park parties, to various chapters of the Loveparade with Sven Väth in the 90s and since then countless generation-spanning parties. These moments represent the highlights of infinite personal clubbing experiences. It is the manifestation of the Berlin spirit, emerging from its considerable strife. This history is not without its complications - from temporary closure by the authorities and several raids in the early years to closure and demolition of the old location in 2005. What followed was years of wandering in exile and, finally, resurrection in the new home in Kraftwerk Berlin.

These stories, conversations and shared experiences within our walls forge a resilience that drives towards a shared ideal, the Tresor sound: community, resistance, and the world to come. This was observed in the newly re-unified German youth, who danced and celebrated together from the club’s inception, and into the present day through ongoing community work in Detroit. 

Tresor Records was founded in the same year and began to serve as a platform for exporting the new sounds associated with Tresor all around the world. Emergent musicians from Michigan, such as Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance and Drexciya, were pivotal in shaping these early years. Their visits to Berlin would kick-start dialogue between the youth movement in Europe and these musicians. This story is one of friendship and community-building, inextricably linked with cities like Detroit, Birmingham or Edinburgh, where like-minded friends built something truly special, where revelatory rhythms soundtrack decaying industry in corrupted metropoles. 

Tresor Records has been the fertile soil for dozens upon dozens of creative minds, from the very luminaries of the scene who developed electronic music over the last three decades through to contemporary protagonists who are currently defining the sound of the future -  A more than 300 strong catalogue displays an unmistakable identity - the Tresor spirit.

To those that have danced before, and to those that will dance in the future: the light at the end of the long Tresor tunnel is a signal. A flicker amidst the fog. This is our future. This is our place.
