Rhythmatic Music for Speakers

Speaker Music is a digital audio and extended media praxis inspired by Rhythmanalysis, a book of essays by urbanist philosopher Henri Lefebvre as well as considerations of momentum and the “chronopolitical” from cultural theorist Kodwo Eshun. Speaker Music desires to engineer affect and sculpt sentiment into a multitextural sound object in response to rhythmanalytic speculations and curatorial decisions within a given vibrational ontology. Speaker Music is the production of a rhythmic body, quivering the nexus event of the moment into a collapsed “nonpulsed time” toward a shared sphere of intimacy.

Rhythmatic Music for Speakers is a developing programmatic praxis rerouting sound and gesture into sonic paintings via iPad, or further abstractions through live mixing with Ableton. As a matter of staging a closed stereo field, a rhythmanalysis of each performance environment will be factored into the spatial situation of sampled audio alongside techniques for drumming inspired by percussionists such as Rashied Ali, Max Roach and Steve Poindexter.

Seattle-based CCL (@ccl-tuf) is a DJ, promoter and curator. They’re a founding member of TUF, a local collective focused on community-building and creating visibility for underrepresented artists in dance music. Known for bold musical choices, CCL blends a caleidoscope of rhythms, usually playing a mixture of deep, immersive breaks, electro, techno and bass music. Ahead of their Unsound Kraków 2019, CCL has prepared an exciting mix full of deep sounds, bookended by experimental Polish music from past and present. Enjoy!

With the latest mix in our series, New York producer, DJ and musician AceMo, takes us on a late-night adventure through the hyper-dimensions of breakbeat science. Looping the rhythmic, sample-based psychedelia of jungle/drum and bass until time becomes a circle, AceMo pays homage to the histories of breakbeat-oriented club music on both sides of the Atlantic ocean. In the process, he reaffirms the reverence, style and skill that have positioned him & his constituents as some of the most important forces to emerge out of New York in recent years. Lost In Destiny or not, AceMo’s train is on schedule.

“Stereomodernism” is a mix that frames techno as embodied aural history, from a Black theoretical perspective—and as a direct foil to Rainhald Goetz's “Rave,” an attempt to counter the fantasy that is the white, Eurocentric view of a distinctly African American artform. DeForrest Brown, Jr., who produces music and other media as Speaker Music, draws on the poet Tsitsi Ella Jaji’s concept of “dubbing in stereo for solidarity”: his mix melds Detroit techno and adjacent sounds of African-American culture, illuminating the relationship between techno and “centuries of attempts to evade and subvert the status quo in America.” With an illustration by Abdul Qadim Haqq.
