This month we were joined on Worldwide FM by one of Brazil's finest, @barbaraboeing. Co-captain of the Alter Disco parties / mix series and now residing in Lisbon, she offers up a flawless 60-minute mix that travels the globe with a big nod to her beloved Brazil. We cruised the first hour with a selection of street soul and downtempo cuts.

As you would expect of someone called Lovefingers, American DJ and producer Andrew Hogge has a very special touch when it comes to making, playing and releasing emotionally involving, blissed out music. Hailing from LA, he runs the magical ESP Institute label and is also half of The Stallions as well as being a self-proclaimed hippie. That always comes through in the organic, loved up music he works with, and visual aesthetics always seem just as important to him as musical ones. 

The romantic and intoxicating mix he serves up is dedicated to Red Light Records owner Tako Reyenga and Mule Musiq affiliate Kuniyuki Takahashi. It is a loose-limbed, love-fuelled and fully horizontal delight made up of underlapping grooves, oriental motifs and gluey pads. The second half touches on more physical drums but also offers up yet more heavenly ambiance, bird song and jumbled percussion that will have you reaching for your shades and dreaming of summer.

There’s a subtle power to Beta Librae’s productions, an invitation to lose yourself in the moment, and give way to the whispering synths and striking kicks. Like a steady pulse, sounds melt into one another without missing a beat, often making time difficult to place. Vibrant animations are reflected in the sci-fi spaciousness and unpredictable grooves. With a strong connection to visual art, it's fitting that her tracks would be so evocative. Like a daydream, her music takes you through memories and landscapes to create a lasting emotional resonance. Her recent releases, a track on comp 4 by 1221 and cassette S/T for Lillerne Tapes, are marked by experimentation into the floating world of dub-tinged ambience and techno. Unraveling genre preconceptions, Beta Librae repeatedly dives into the unknown.

For Truancy Volume 170, she continues this imaginative and free-flowing approach, with the first 44 minutes dedicated to her recent musical creations. The second half explores tracks she has been listening to recently, most of them given to her by friends. From the hypnotising keys of Downstairs J to the surreal sounds of Buttechno, the mix highlights a variety of genres that appear to influence Beta Librae’s own productions. In the accompanying interview, we discuss childhood inspirations, life in New York, contemporary art and upcoming plans, and she delves into the nuances of her creative process.

I’m usually very meticulous and nitpicky when recording mixes, I can get stuck on things for ages but with the image I almost found myself in a state of ataraxia haha. You can hear it translate very much so in my song choices. There’s a lot of very warm, lush, slow building ambient tracks which I know is a massive deviation from my usual output, but it’s what I felt the image demanded of me." J. P. Wake Dream is proud to present Palav Aed, the first full length album by Amsterdam/Tallinn based Estonian musician Ruutu Poiss.

Recorded over the course of seven years from 2012 to 2019 in various home studios in Ruutu Poiss’ home town Tallinn, the tracks on Palav Aed were all made revolving around the same equipment constellation, the album sounding as coherent as it sounds timeless.

Having released several 7”s, 12”s and EPs on Levels, International Major Label, Rets Records and being featured on various compilations from Fasaan Rec. and Porridge Bullet, Ruutu Poiss defined a sonic universe of his own that is equally unique as it is familiar.

Rich in influences and references, from ethereal harmonics and melodics that might be traced back to his background in choral music, to saturated synth funk and psychedelic futurism, Palav Aed is a document that encompasses the full range of Ruutu Poiss, a musician peacefully floating through leftfield electronics, experiments and sonic imaginations.
