Carhartt WIP Radio September 2013: Awesome Tapes From Africa - Radio Show

In STEALTH by Sonallah Ibrahim, the narrator, a boy living in Cairo sneaks around the city spying on its citzens. By taking in its sights, sounds, and smells, the boy creates a portraint of 1950s Cairo. In a previous post, we explored those sights with an animation by Nathaniel Whitcomb who created a motion collage from the mid-century Cairo photographs of Don Church. Now, we present to you a mix of popular 1950s Egytian music compiled by Brian Shimkovitz of Awesome Tapes From Africa.

Kidus aka dj Mitmitta (@Mitmitta) is one of the main record collectors based in Ethiopia. He runs the Mitmitta Muzika record label where he re-released, in collab with Domino Sound from New Orleans, a compilation of traditional wedding songs by Getatchew Degefu & friends. Another release is planned for 2016, so check it. Mitmitta is that spicy powder very muched used in Ethiopian cuisine. After having released numerous successful mixtapes, mostly under K7, Kidus wanted to release something live. He invited me in his house for an afternoon session in his house in Addis. This mix includes some of his latest discoveries including Ethiopian and Eritrean songs, mostly slow grooves, melodic and musical. If you’re not into the Ethiopian music digging scene, you might not realize it, but this mix is exactly in the actual vibe of the moment, people are digging more and more this kind of sounds right now. In their 6 years of existence, Akalé Wubé have never stopped widening the canvas onto which they lay their music, which keeps becoming richer and deeper just like their primary source of inspiration: the popular Ethiopian repertoire of the 60s and 70s. The band started off by covering music from the 'Ethiopiques' series, after which they immersed themselves deeper into Ethiopian music, all the while multiplying their collaborations with musicians and dancers from Ethiopia, Africa and Europe. Slowly but surely, clocking in at around 200 concerts in Europe, Asia and Africa, the band has become one of the world’s leading ambassadors of Ethiopian groove.

'Mèmona' is a traditional Ethiopian piece from the Tigray Region (the northernmost of the nine ethnic regions of Ethiopia), played at weddings. Akalé Wubé discovered the song as sung by Tèwèldè Rèdda on the 'Éthiopiques 5: Tigrigna Music 1970-1975' compilation from Buda Musique, released in 1999. They covered it in their third album 'Sost', and it has since grown into one of the great rockin' jams in their setlists. Nonetheless, saxophone and flute player from the band Etienne de la Sayette has decided to try his producing chops on a remix, trying to bring the tune into a gritty psychedelic afro-rock trip, with lots of sanza...

“Four Fundamental States of Matter” is a debut EP for the Lithuanian producer Purple. While each piece is a different “state of matter”, Purple lets the listener to decide which one is which, individually. 

Gentle but uncertain currents of water, warm but not constant gusts of wind, solid and clearly visible objects, exotic but untouchable plasmic phenomenons happens around us everyday. But life itself is no different than those states surrounding us. It can feel liquified - unpredictable and shapeless; flowing but having no particular destination. Solid and tangible, giving us first hand experiences. Life can feel like it's disappearing and evaporating, no longer being visible. But sometimes it expands and opens up to us under unusual conditions. Life opens to us if we open ourselves to it.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I’m Simon Hill part of the psychedelic soul band MNP. Also playing bass in The Palms and a bit of everything in Beta Hector. I also make animation by the name of Manalishi. Life ain’t too shabby. I’ve been collecting vinyl for 25 years. Help!

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

A 45 is condensed goodness and love.

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

The mix is half stuff I’ve bought during fun times in lockdown. I just grabbed a shoebox and pulled out the rest of my babies. Some of them are filthy rotten and some are just pure beauty.

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

The Palms rehearse in a park somewhere in Hove every other Friday night.
Myself and Toby from Mnp deejay monthly in The Jolly Brewer in Brighton but we’re waiting for them to open!
