Proponents of techstep rejoice; Deception Recordings has remastered six tracks from the golden age of drum and bass, including two never-before-released cuts. For the first time, all six tracks will be universally accessible and available on digital platforms. Label boss Manifest provides the opening track, Never 2 Far (featuring Lisa Viva). Ethereal vocals, dystopian digital effects, dissonant pads, weighty 808s and crunchy breaks are the order of business here. This behemoth of a track still hits as hard as it did over 20 years ago. Inside My Soul comes courtesy of Outerlimits. Crisp and bouncy two-step drums are matched with moody vocals
and a thunderous bassline to create a dark, hypnotic, and fresh techy roller. Manifest returns with Dub War Pt. 1. Clash-ready ragga vocals pair with shuffling syncopated drums and an unrelenting slew off 808s. This one is a certified dancefloor damager.

Unreleased up until now, Manifest and Soulphonics are responsible for Oldskool. As the name suggests, musical references to the past abound. Think raw breaks, resampled pads, dubbed out effects, and booming 808s. Crunchy drums, jazzy Rhodes chords, and a rolling bassline form the backbone of 5 Boros (another track by Manifest) to create another quality techstep cut. The final track of the release, Dub War Pt. 2, is a grittier and uplifting take on Pt. 1. Also previously
unreleased, this weapon of a tune is now available for deployment in your own sets. Use with caution.

Heavyweight trio Travesty returns to Tytanium Armour Recordings with two refreshed versions of dark and dirty back catalogue cuts. Characterised by a sound influenced by countless sources but nevertheless dominated with grit and groove, Travesty have found a home for their neurofunk-oriented releases on Tytanium Armour Recordings. Geographical proximity and a shared musical palette shaped by the darkside sounds from the early ‘00s ensure that the artist and label work together in synergy, resulting in a release which pays homage to the foundational sounds of contemporary drum and bass with all the edge you would expect from a 2024 production. 

Opening with an updated version of their 2018 neuro stepper Enclosed, Travesty instantly demonstrates their ability to straddle the boundary between the musical past, present, and future. Travesty substitutes a distorted reese bass from the original track with a more resonant bass reminiscent of Optical’s output from the late ‘90s and early ‘00s whilst still preserving the bassline’s melodic progression and skippy drum pattern of the original track, injecting a fresh boost of energy into an already monstrous tune. 

Techstep veteran Skru graces Tytanium Armour Recordings with a remix of Containment for the second and final track of the release. Heavily distorted reeses and thunderous amens come courtesy of the artist who has secured releases on labels as legendary as Tech Itch, Renegade Hardware, and Serial Killaz. Here, the language of fast breaks and deep basslines spoken by techstep ensures that the relationship between jungle and drum and bass is as visible as ever.
