disquiet

After discarding a few ideas, I resolved to use only recorded sounds in this piece. The aim was to include as many different metals as I could find around the house. The materials used include chimes, kitchen utensils, beer caps and more.

As for the composition I took the approach of randomness; I imported all my recordings into Logic Pro X, sliced them up and shuffled them around. Without altering the material further, and by using only the internal effects, this assemblage was then sculptured and mixed down.

Equipment used:
sE Electronics microphone, Mackie mixer and Logic Pro X on an iMac.
Thanks to CamelAudio for the free and brutal CamelCrusher.

Aluminium, Gold, Silver, Brass, Steel, Copper, Zinc.

My eyes lift to see
A sky that is entirely

This is a haiku taken from Kusamakura (or The Three-Cornered World), a novel by Natsume Soseki.

A book that transcends the plot development of "standard" Western literature, this is a book about the nature of art and beauty, filled with lyrical beauty and internal monologues on what it means to be an artist.

To give you an idea, here's how the book starts:

“If you work by reason, you grow rough-edged; if you choose to dip your oar into sentiment’s stream, it will sweep you away. Demanding your own way only serves to constrain you. However you look at it, the human world is not an easy place to live. And when its difficulties intensify, you find yourself longing to leave that world and dwell in some easier one—and then, when you understand at last that difficulties will dog you wherever you may live, this is when poetry and art are born.”

One of the most influential modern Japanese writers, Natsume Soseki’s literary career started in 1903, with a series of haiku and renga published on various literary magazines.

Between 1900 and 1903 he studied at the UCL in London, but this proved to be quite a dramatic experience for the young Soseki. Despite this, when Soseki returned to Japan, he exploded into prolific writing activity.

There's so little information about this amazing renga poet that I decided to share another poem written by him. This one is part of a longer sequence, written in 1463:

Only the moon remains
floating in the memory upon
Kinokawa River—
pale glistening waves,
the blank wake of drowned men.
 
About this poem, the author said: "Among the hundreds and thousands who have drowned and perished in this river
due to the disorders in this province were those whom I knew in former days. Often
I would walk along the river, gazing at the moon."

Shinkei (1406-75) was a renowned renga poet and critic, best known for his two-part work "Sasamegoto" (Murmured Conversations). The Buchla Easel has been my favourite companion ever since I acquired it five or so years ago. Together with the KOMA BD-101 analogue delay they make a perfect team for travel and minimal live performances. The recent addition of the Buchla AUX card introduces beautiful noise, and allows for further modulations. Recorded with plenty of random voltages and live manual knob tweaking.

The phases of the moon, as are the phases of life. The seasons of the year, so also the seasons of life. The only constant is perpetual change.

Although slightly melancholic perhaps, this piece has a positive, upwards moving continuum, towards its subtle and peaceful finale.

First the Moog One was recorded in one take, through two Roland Space Echos, one each for left and right channel. Then, with quite an amount of knob tweaking, the shimmer and playfulness of the Waldorf Quantum was added, also in one take, through the tape echoes.

Only a few days ago, I performed a live improvised soundtrack to the silent movie Metropolis, so this project was unusually timely. Once my gear was hooked up in the studio again, I improvised this soundtrack in a similar way, imagining walking through an an abandoned, haunted old movie theatre, in the darkest depths of the night...

Recorded live in the studio.
Moog One starts off with a bass drone.
Waldorf Quantum comes in, adding dissonant and spooky sounds.
After a while a piano is heard, delivering random eerie notes.
Towards the end, the chase is on, or is it just imagination?
Two Roland Space Echoes create added spookiness.

I think might have taken a bit of a personal approach to this project.

To create "short bursts of music" I used the Buchla Easel for one part of the composition, and the Waldorf Quantum for the other.

I created a fairly complex, random, self running patch on the Buchla Easel, which spits out short bursts of random notes and noise. This was routed through the KOMA BBD Delay, with its delay time controlled by the MakeNoise Wogglebug.

On the Quantum I choose a patch with two particle oscillators set to granular, and then I manipulated them in numerous ways during the recording. This is basically live slicing and live manipulation of a sample.

I would recommend you to follow the track through to its end, as there are quite a lot of interesting textures developing.
