Stand outs in the indie-rap haven of Minnesota, No Bird Sing combines the talents of emcee Joe Horton, drummer/producer Graham O'Brien, and guitarist/producer Robert Mulrennan. With Definition Sickness, the trio has maintained the integrity of their live-band roots while exploring a more produced sound that ranges from stark minimalism to lush expansiveness. 

The first single, “DON’T THINK”, is a brooding track where Horton shares vocal duties with SFR label head SAGE FRANCIS. Other guests on the album include FIX cohorts Crescent Moon (Kill the Vultures) and Kristoff Krane, as well as Sadistik, Chastity Brown, James Diers (Halloween, Alaska), Aby Wolf, Adam Svec and Molly Dean.

NBS released their eponymous debut to critical acclaim in 2009. Their 2011 follow-up, "Theft of the Commons", along with the US tour dates that followed, served to expand their loyal, burgeoning fanbase across the Midwest and beyond. 

Their SFR debut,  Definition Sickness, offers a meditative commentary on modern life, owing much to leftist political theorists like Howard Zinn as well as Eastern-leaning philosophers like Alan Watts and Lao Tzu. Musically the dark, transcendent instrumentation of the record creates a rich and varied soundscape that will immediately entice fans of multiple genres. Repeat listeners will be rewarded by both the layered lyrical themes and the ear candy that’s provided by the nuanced sonic compositions. 

"If you took away the vocals, you'd never know it was hip hop," admits drummer/producer Graham O'Brien. "We're just investigating the relationship between hip hop and other genres—taking the spoken, rhythmic word and putting it in other places."  

"That's what creativity is," vocalist Horton says. "It's coming to this point where you don't know exactly what you're doing and having to figure out what to do. The second you're not doing that, you're just rehashing old shit."

The emergence of hip-hop out of Queens, NY has proven to be timeless. From Run DMC, LL Cool J, and Kool G Rap to A Tribe Called Quest, Large Professor, Organized Konfusion, and Mobb Deep there's never been a shortage of dynamic music from the borough. Longtime observer and emcee of the culture Truth is set to release his debut album "From Ashes To Kingdome Come" on Ill Adrenaline Records. A few years back Truth formed an alliance with PF Cuttin (of Blahzay Blahzay) and together the Queens emcee and the Brooklyn producer/DJ/engineer are ready to release a typical 90's throwback sounding full-length that carries PF's thumbprint throughout. On the 18-track strong heater Truth picks up various topics, ranging from life experiences to repping hip-hop culture - always showcasing his passionate and sharp lyrical rhyme skills. Entirely recorded and mixed by PF Cuttin, the album's raw and dusty sound stays true to the streets, including features from heavyweights such as the late Sean Price, O.C., and AG (of D.I.T.C.). Newcomer JK1 The Supernova handles the majority of production along with veteran producers PF Cuttin, Psycho Les (of The Beatnuts), Da Beatminerz, and DJ Doom. East coast duo Constant Deviants release their new album "Omerta" on June 28th through Six2Six Records, available worldwide on vinyl, CD and digital formats.

Next Saturday June 25th, M.I. and DJ Cutt will be performing at the Loudpalooza event being held in Baltimore's Castaways, before heading north for a weeklong series of radio show guest appearances in Manhattan, The Bronx and Brooklyn.  

Beginning with DJ Eclipse's Rap Is Outta Control Show on Sunday June 26th, they will be promoting the album and M.I.'s new film "Six2Six".  Selected by Ralph McDaniels for screening at the Hip Hop Film Festival in August, it co:stars Treach (Naughty by Nature), Syleena Johnson and Chief Rocker Busy Bee.

"DeLorean" is the second official single to be taken from the album following on from "So Underrated" which was released back in the Spring.

Since 2004, the team at Leedz Edutainment has put on for Hip-Hop from across the map. Whether it’s an up-and-coming cat from the New England area or a legendary emcee, Leedz’ placement as a top-tier promotion crew is well-known. And their new compilation, Eastern Standard, proves exactly that as it pulls together a variety of dope Hip-Hop acts with roots on the East Coast.

It’s only fitting, then, that the project’s lead single is “The East Coast,” a hard-nosed head-nodder from Philadelphia native and renown Nerdcore rapper, Mega Ran. While he’s well known for his upbeat disposition on social media and more narrative-heavy joints, Ran can go toe-to-toe with the grittier spitters, too. 

At least, that’s what he brings on this slapper produced by Boston-based artist The Arcitype, with cuts accompanied by DJ Slipwax who works in some slick scratched vocals from The Roots’ Black Thought. “The East Coast” depicts a reality that Ran and plenty of others have experienced, from the fact that damn near “everybody can rock a mic/ and somehow 7 on 1 is the make up of a proper fight.”
