Steppes, deserts and arid mountains dominate the region of Cuyo in west Argentina. Within this barren land, a fragile water infrastructure creates fertile valleys, croplands and vineyards. The piece moves between these extremes of dry and wet. The wind, as well as the the hands of the recordist articulate the silent elements of the landscape. Except gentle equalization, all composed sounds are unprocessed.

This is the second half of a thunderstorm recording made in open flat mallee country. The wide open flatness of the land, the low height and the low density of the mallee gums, with their naturally wide spacing, makes this an excellent venue for enjoying the atmospheric acoustics of thunder. In the first half of the recording, the early-morning thunderstorm approaches gradually from the west; and in this half, it nears and arrives at the recording location.

Just as the storm arrived (the final peal of thunder in this recording), it suddenly and completely ceased and fell silent, and rain set in for the next couple of hours, in intermittent waves. Then, the rain also dissipated and ceased, leaving a beautifully pungent earthy scent in the air, and the hues of the orange-red soil and of all of the variegated flora looking so much deeper, darker, and richer. Throughout this whole time, the air remained remarkably still and calm.

Recorded respectfully on land that was originally the home country of the Ngadjuri and Danggali peoples.**

**Optional extra reading and critical reflective thinking: This land was not 'purchased' under some 'real estate deal' or 'agreement'. It was simply,  bluntly, and forcibly taken away from those who belonged to the land itself - and to whom, therefore, the land itself had in all ways belonged - for uncountable millennia. It was then handed down, during the subsequent couple of centuries, from one generation to the next, amongst those who had taken it. This recognition and statement of unquestionable and undeniable truth does not imply any personal disrespect or animosity towards the current landholders; but it does very consciously raise some very deep and consequential questions that have never, to date, been fundamentally and properly addressed, let alone contemplated or answered, let alone assimilated into contemporary cultural consciousness, and acted upon. If the currently dominant/dominating culture had ever truly and deeply comprehended, and thus had been inwardly changed by, the lessons at hand in its own very brief and dark history, this country would not now be experiencing a 'housing crisis', on the back of a huge 'greed spike' in the housing market. It would understand the meaning of land, and the meaning of life itself, so very, very differently. Alas, this has not - and, I believe, will never - come to be so. Contemporary dominant/dominating humanity is simply not capable of such enlightenment and transformation. QED. [I am creating more trouble for myself, I know. But I cannot help but say what I believe to be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.]**

Recorded in Ngarrindjeri country, now a national park.

2025.11.26 Wind and Light Rain before Dawn. Coastal Forest. Late Spring.

Dawn in bushland near the inland edge of the Kurangk/Coorong lagoon. On the far side of the lagoon, towering dunes half-draped with tough green bushes seclude and protect the lagoon from the ever-audible roaring ocean. Skimming above the ocean, a storm intermittently spears the waves with lightning, and rolls its thunder inland, towards the dawning bushland.

Une immersion sonore durant 7 jours au Phare de Cordouan, situé en pleine mer, à plusieurs kilomètres de la côte Atlantique.
Départ de nuit un vendredi de février 2023. Nous rejoignons le phare dans la navette fluviale, avec l’équipe du bateau et les deux gardiens, qui relèvent le binôme sur place depuis 15 jours.  Aux premières lueurs du jour je n’en mène pas large quand il faut enfiler le wader, tenue étanche indispensable pour se mettre à l’eau et marcher du bateau jusqu’à l’entrée du phare. Une dizaine de mètres, pas plus, mais avec de l’eau jusqu’à la taille et en portant son matériel à bout de bras. Rien de plus banal pour les gardiens, qui échangent quelques phrases et accolades avec leurs deux collègues sur place depuis une quinzaine,  avant de se séparer. 
Nous voilà arrivés, isolés sur le plateau de Cordouan jusqu’à la prochaine relève dans 7 jours. Ma première impression est le calme et la sérénité qui règnent. Le roi des Phares, comme il est surnommé, nous domine de toute sa splendeur et le brouillard présent ce jour-là ajoute une touche mystique.
Durant cette semaine je vais avoir la liberté d’arpenter de long en large les lieux. Ici, la notion de temps change et l’on vit au rythme de la lune. Je marche de longues heures sur l’estran, plateau rocheux et sablonneux,  découvert seulement à marée basse. Je capte le fracas des vagues de l’océan au loin, les vaguelettes qui viennent s’échouer le long de la digue, les cris perçants des goélands et les piaillements des tournepierres. Cette quiétude est seulement perturbée par quelques rares passages d’un avion militaire. Mais le son le plus caractéristique de ce lieu est pour moi celui des balanes. Ces crustacés marins fixés au mur d’enceinte extérieur du phare, présents par milliers, et qui produisent un son très particulier (à écouter entre 7m20s et 7m50s). 
A marée haute, entouré par les flots, j’enregistre depuis les toits terrasses le déferlement des vagues, le bruit du vent qui s’engouffre dans les moindres interstices du phare et produit d’étranges résonances. Je monte et descend les 301 marches qui font résonner mes pas et admire le coucher de soleil  depuis la salle de la lanterne, le point culminant du phare.  
Cette expérience unique et hors du temps,  j’ai souhaité la retranscrire sur une écoute immersive de 10 minutes. Je souhaite qu’elle puisse vous faire voyager et apprécier l’atmosphère de ce lieu magique.

CORDOUAN - 7 days in the Cordouan lighthouse

This Superb Lyrebird is singing at dawn in the year after the great fires in its habitat in Wollemi National park wilderness. These birds survived by sheltering in the deep rainforest gorges below the blaze above on the sandstone plateaus of dry eucalypt forest.
