Dutch music label Rubber unarchived a mixtape by Dutch cult figure Ton Lebbink from the mid 90’s. Ton has been mostly known for his work in the eighties, where he paired absurdist and witty Dutch wordplay with stripped down wave-instrumentals. This mixtape introduces you to his far lesser known nineties era, where he went from being a bouncer to becoming a fitness instructor, and replaced his voice with a Roland W-30 sampler.

Specifically recorded for aerobic classes, we take off with a production of Lebbink himself that then blends into his self-bootlegged club-cuts from the radio. This adventurous mixtape seems the right prelude to the upcoming release ‘Wat Doe je Met Me?' on Rubber – a 12’’ EP containing three Ton Lebbink dance productions that never saw daylight.

Few other labels can lay claim to such a foundational role in the origin myth of house music as Chicago's Trax Records. back again with my end of year mixtape & essay for my mubi notebook magazine column, this mix is very much more like a personal one rather than an end of year in films round up. for someone who in part works around the release of new films, I don't actually end up getting to see it all and Im not always so up to date and I hate the idea of some sort of contrite 2024 round up mix. when making my cinema sound work I always try and bend the material in front of me to find alternative possibilities of narrative or (re)context or to reintroduce it to the world, it has to be a devotion to something that incredibly excites me. I found that making this mix (deep in the night at a friends in a chaotic time) there were so many personal favourites (suicide, dean blunt, silver apples, throbbing gristle, etc) moods and textures that I’m drawn to, that the 70 odd minutes was more akin to putting together an end of year catharsis work than studying the music and sounds within the last years cinema. and the film list was not a best watch, some I only found through the sounds making this (although some do slap hard and I watched b4hand) but sonics I picked up on and felt helped make the collage through their sonic worlds. kevin costner still got it
