Moving Up In The World

A rifle shot from the town centre rips through the air, and with it comes the bellow of an enormous predator. From the dam, Shep and Taliyah hardly stir in their despair; even the dutiful Natessa struggles to rise to attention as a sworn ranger. Granted, newfound knowledge of their world's inescapable demise is bound to test anyone's resolve. It is only as the treeline across the water begins to shake that the despondent trio take notice. Crashing footfalls, splintering wood: above, small winged lizards burst from the branches in panic. Natessa brings up her binoculars.

Her eyes find Rainslate, emerging from the bush like a man possessed with a rifle lugged over his shoulder. Behind him, the raging Carcharodontosaurus closes in. She figured he'd be hundreds of miles away by now: either underground or at the bottom of a bottle, but here he was. In that moment, the Australian with a giant set of jaws at his back was hope.
