What are the key characteristics of blues music? This lesson plan uses guest musicologists and the professor of the course to summarize blues music and its history. The student will be introduced to a musical tradition with roots in the nineteenth century, but which is still relevant to making music today. The student can learn about how the lyrics of blues songs reflect the social environment in which they were created, and about the musical techniques that underpin the structures of blues songs. You do not need to play an instrument, to sing or have any prior musical knowledge to be able to complete this lesson. The students will complete a writing research assignment on topics assigned. The class session will be recorded for students to reflect on and each student will have access to the recorded session. The professor will provide feedback from the student’s reflections and further research.

describe the common structure in blues music
list well-known blues songs and artists
describe the historical context of the blues
explain the nature of typical blues lyrics

BLUES CLASS Live Lesson on WLCD 98.7

Lane College Radio Station, WLCD 98.7  is a Low-Powered FM Radio Station operated from the campus of  Lane College an HBCU ( Historical Black College Univerisity)  in Jackson, Tennessee. 
The stations current formats are  Rhythm & Blues, Classic Soul, Jazz, Gospel, and Community Programming.

More than 30 years ago Lane College alumnus and Jackson businessman James E. Wolfe helped start the college's first radio station, which continued to thrive until the station went off the air in the mid -1980's. In December of 2004, Wolfe returned to Lane to announce along with former President McClure that the ownership of WJKR- FM 98.7, owned by West Tennessee Cultural Heritage Association, Inc., of which Wolfe is President, had been transferred to the college. 

During July 2005, the College acquired the FCC license to operate its own radio station, WLCD-FM.  Lane is one of only two private colleges or universities in West Tennessee with its own radio station.
 
WLCD-FM is housed in the Mass Communication Building, Shy Hall on Lane College campus.
