Coat Rack for Four-Hands

Yellowed Fan was the final project of the Spring semester of 2020. The inspiration behind the song comes from an old yellowed box fan that sat behind the composer for much of the writing process. As it turned, it wobbled slightly due to its old age and that unevenness is what drives this song forward in mostly uneven time signatures.

The piece begins with the second marimba starting the ostinato that will be the drive for the majority of the piece. One by one the others join in, adding their own texture to the hypnotic pattern. A sudden break to some chromaticism in C leads us from D dorian to E minor. Some phrigian elements begin to show themselves as some of the players take turns with the melody. As they develop the theme further, there is a sudden change to A phrygian and the time switches from 12/8:10/8 alternating to 7/8. This new section quickly gives way to a waterfall of descending scales, some chromatic some not, and even this crumbles further to wild glissandos falling deeper and deeper until the piece returns to the main theme in D. Familiar bits and pieces reappear only to give way to the C cadence once more and the end.

This piece was awarded first place in the undergraduate category in the 2020 Wisconsin Alliance For Composers Student Music Competition.
