in the history of life on earth, there have been a number of times in which the extinction rate rose significantly above the expected background rate of extinction. five such events stood out to early paleontologists as having particularly high extinction rates. these have come to be known as "the big five" mass extinctions.
the following five tracks are reconstructions of what our ancestors would have experienced as they endured these five cataclysmic events.
our jawless fish ancestors in the ordovician, our early tetrapod ancestors in the devonian, our cynodont ancestors in the permian, our basal mammalian ancestors in the triassic, and our proto-primate ancestors of the cretaceous each lived through and survived each of these events. if they hadn't, this album would not exist. let us honor their legacy as best we can.
