From 1876 to 1947, a time ball tower stood in Bremerhaven to the north of the entrance to the New Harbour lock. Before the construction work was carried out, discussions were held about the right location. A location in the then still independent Geestemünde (Kingdom of Prussia) and a location in Bremerhaven (Free Hanseatic City of Bremen) were debated. Ultimately, several factors spoke in favor of the location in Bremerhaven. The time ball was put into operation on October 1, 1876.

In the 19th century, knowledge of the exact time was necessary in order to determine the longitude of a ship's position at sea. The optical signal emitted by the falling time ball enabled ship's commands and watchmakers to set ship's chronometers to an accuracy of fractions of a second.

With the advent and spread of radio telegraphic time signals from 1907 onwards, time balls gradually lost their significance. In Bremerhaven, the time ball was no longer used to transmit time signals from January 1, 1929, after the tower had been converted to light time signals. The time ball tower was probably scrapped in 1947.

In 1824, the British captain Robert Wauchope (1788-1862) submitted a proposal to the Admiralty for the installation of time balls. The first time ball was tested in Portsmouth in 1829. This was followed in 1833 by others in Greenwich and on St. Helena, and in 1836 in Cape Town (see Signal Hill).

Cuxhaven was the first German port to receive a time ball in 1874. This was followed by Wilhelmshaven, Bremerhaven, Bremen, Emden, Hamburg, Kiel and Kiel-Wik, Stettin, Swinemünde and Danzig's port of Neufahrwasser.

There were around 160 time balls worldwide, of which around 60 still exist. Most of them were demolished in the 1920s after their task was taken over by time signal transmitters (Germany 1910, Great Britain 1924) from 1907.
