I Hope You Suffer

Guy Gerbers Supplement Facts imprint continues to drop the bombs, this time courtesy of Brooklyn-based duo No Regular Play, with their searing package Fall Up To The Sky featuring the molten vocals of Maya Hatch and a blinding remix from Life and Death. The EP came about after label head Guy Gerber heard a recording of an NRP live set at an after party and was struck by one particular synth line, so much so that he contacted the pair shortly after to discuss a release. A prevailing musical connection on both sides made Supplement Facts the natural destination for Lookin - a track four years in the making. Having been a staple of the NRP live set through multiple reincarnations, the final version (built around the original synth line) was made especially for Supplement Facts and now features the vocals of Nicks cousin, Maya Hatch, who delivers the perfect female response to Gregs original musings. In Fall Up To The Sky, Mayas luscious voice infiltrates deep alongside warm gliding synth pads and the techy drive of the kicks craft a tight swinging groove. Lookin carries the trademark NRP lilt thats laidback and bumping in equal measure. Idiosyncratic purrs, human and discoid, dapple the kicking groove and Gregs sultry sleaze is the perfect playmate for the moody, strutting bassline. When the oscillating synth finally impacts its a streak of rave gold in the tracks armour. Life and Death turn in a stunning rework of Lookin in which Gregs vocal is toned down to a melancholy murmur and the emotive chords sweep over the bouncing bassline and crisp percussive beats. Shrouded in mystery and the subject of much acclaim in electronic music circles, the band and label Life and Death is the creative project that keeps on giving, responsible for some of 2011s most innovative music. Greg Paulus and Nick DeBryn met in Minnesota aged 8 and have been bonded by a mutual study and appreciation for a wide spectrum of sounds ever since. Inaugurated at the legendary Marcy Hotel, home to the Wolf + Lamb family, a melting pot of musical influences ultimately boiled down to No Regular Play. The NRP evolution continues with the near completion of an orchestra piece for the Minnesota Orchestra and the duo are preparing to release their debut album in 2012.

Newcomers Millok & Zigelli from Montenegro debuts in the Noir Music family with this fine piece of deephouse music. Soothing groove, pads, atmospheres and a vocal that drags you deep into the track and makes you fall in love. 
This was love at first listen for us and from there the track just grew bigger and better.

Following the release of his highly acclaimed debut album, On Acid, earlier this year, Berlin artist, Recondite, steps in to provide two deep and dark remixes of Scuba’s ‘The Hope’ for the next Hotflush single. 

The label has long been championing Recondite’s work. The track ‘Backbone’ was a notable highlight of Scuba’s revered DJ Kicks mix before the latter applied his own hand on a full-throttle remix of ‘Jaded’, to close out On Acid. 

Here, Recondite defines both remixes in the form of two journeys taken at opposing times of the day: a late-night drive and an early-morning walk. In both, the energy and aggression of Scuba’s original is drawn increasingly into a more desolate landscape as glacial synth lines bleed over one another into depths lurking far below the planes of convention.

Endangered Species is the eagerly awaited full-length album from Wolf & Lamb’s musically virtuosic No Regular Play, a duo equally at home in the rehearsal rooms of Julliard as in the main room of Fabric.

Their debut album was made in early summer 2012, exclusively in the studio of New York City’s Marcy Hotel. Over the course of 11 elegantly interlaced tracks, Greg Paulus and Nicholas DeBruyn create a veritable cornucopia of beautiful forms. A steaming hothouse of closed high-hats, rife with the plaintive, fluttering bird-calls of Paulus’s inimitable trumpet lines, and unapologetically organic throughout, Endangered Species is as shape-shifting as nature itself.

Endangered Species also includes guest spots from close friends Carolina Sevilla and Lisa Bauer on opening track "Birdfeathers." Alex Scherber, A.K.A. John Camp contributes additional keys on "Birdfeathers" and the title track, "Endangered Species". "The Answer" features vocals and piano from Eliot Cardinaux, a fellow alumnus of Greg's from the Manhattan School of Music. JT Bates, the prolific Minneapolis free jazz and indie drummer, recorded live drums on "Kickback." Mixing for the album was done by musician/producer Francis Harris. The project was mastered by the legend, Joe Lambert, who has also worked with the likes of Animal Collective, Washed Out and Dirty Projectors.

Lonely C & Baby Prince - I Remember Those Days (Tanner Ross Remix)

a/jus/ted is the musical concept of veteran producer Justin Strauss and analog aficionado Teddy Stuart, better known as Eddie Mars. The pairs inaugural release comes in the form of "A brighter light" featuring the incandescent vocals of Jeremy Glenn for London based Under the shade records.

Although a relatively new pairing the due kick off life with a masterful original which moves through its earlier stripped analogue subtleties into an effervescent marauder. The gleaming arp hooks and Glenn's spritely soulful vocal are gradually joined by whacked out acid tinged licks punctuated by a bright billowy bass throughout all the while being lifted from the rousing pads.  All in all achieving a track that sounds at once classic, yet unmistakably modern, file under "end of night".  A real accomplishment for such a new outfit.

Adhering to the current trend for all things Jersey circa 90's is the Lars Vegas (more commonly known as one half of Detroit Swindle) remix. Going straight for the jugular with tight stabs and punchy percussion its manifesto is set out clear to see from the outset.  What makes this different from the run of garage productions currently swamping the scene is its tight pairing with the vocals.  Rather than chopping into a garbled nonsense, Glenn's vocals are allowed free reign and are used in there entirety to provide the extra musicality to move Vegas' remix into a standout weapon.  Make no mistake this will destroy a dancefloor.

Rounding up a/jus/ted show there versatility by remixing themselves, weighing in with a track brimming with ideas. Murky pads align with the tightly sequenced percussion that percolates from the outset. Pushed on by sonorus pads and a relentless deep grueling bass which provides a pivot for the track to advance into a deep, hypnotic ensemble lifted by clips of vocal, this time sounding much more jaded than on the original.  This would certainly be a gem dropped in the most smoke and strobe dens of the world!

If this form can be kept up then a/jus/ted have a very bright future ahead of them.  Grab it now!!
