BALBALAB is a collective of experimental musicians from Singapore, comprising Shark Fung, Dennis Tan, Zai Tang, and Wu Jun Han. The group evolved through the Openlab sessions at The Substation (2014), and have since been exploring a variety of strategies towards electroacoustic improvisation, DIY instrumentation and combining sound & moving- image.

Each member of the collective brings their individual practise into the mix:

Shark Fung (aka Awk Wah) is a veteran of the Singapore experimental music scene whose shifting musical outlook draws on an array of styles and influences in a compellingly, unpredictable manner.

Through the making of objects, installations and performances, Dennis Tan’s projects engage with the environment, perception and communication patterns of sound.

Zai Tang’s work navigates the terrain between sound, space and the body, practising as a composer, sound designer and field recordist for film, contemporary dance and multimedia installations.

As a video projectionist for a variety of music collectives in Singapore, Wu Jun Han explores notions of viscerality, vernacularity and the future, drawing influence from visual music and live improvisation.

Encompassing several disciplines including installation and performance, his interest lies at the intersection of data politics, music and speculative fiction. Working with a broad range of instruments, from acoustic to digital, traditional and hacked, his projects revolve around modes of interfacing and interaction. He is a member of b-quartet and Soundpainting ensemble Erik Satay & The Kampong Arkestra.

As an artist and a musician, Haykal has participated in festivals including Media/Art Kitchen (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Japan), Liquid Architecture, RRREC FEST (Indonesia), da:ns Festival and The M1 Fringe Festival (Singapore) among others.

Endless Return (ER) is a small experimental arts and music platform from Singapore spearheaded by butoh dancer XUE and sound artist/producer Mervin Wong. ER rejects capitalist event structures, opting instead for gatherings that prioritise creative exploration over financial motives. ER happenings cannibalise and iterate on themselves in the form of eternal Returns — unique events that allow for exciting artistic intersections across art, music and performance. 

Initially conceived during the pandemic as a virtual rave, ER has evolved into a music label and experimental curatorial series dedicated to charting the sonic badlands of Singapore and Southeast Asia, staging provocations not only locally, but around the region.

A recipient of the NTU CCA: Platform Projects Curatorial Award in 2021, ER is dedicated to unearthing and showcasing the most subversive of the Singapore/regional underground and cross-disciplinary performance acts. ER's recent music releases include "Parodyse City" (2023) by Singaporean DJ and producer Vangoth666 and 'Jawir' by Yogyakarta based experimental trio Proto Animalia. 

ER has been featured on publications like Mixmag Asia, Female Magazine Singapore and Life in Arpeggio and was the recipient of a Creative Grant by Refraction Festival in 2022 and most recently a T:>Works Per°Form Open Academy of Arts and Activations Fellow. ER has also been a resident with Hong Kong Community Radio for the past two years.
