During a severe wind storm, I revisited the yellow popular from this winter storm recording: https://soundcloud.com/acousticnature/tree-creaks-inside-an-oak

This time, I stuck a pair of EM272 microphones inside the tree cavity instead of putting my SASS in front of the opening. I mainly did this to protect the mics from the heavy rains that came during the night. 

I was really amazed at how well the tree insulated the mics from the outer world's sounds. Even the torrential downpour we received sounded like a gentle drizzle. 

When I popped the SD card into my computer the next morning, I was surprised that the popular made less noise than the previous recording, despite the increased wind speeds. 

I think this may have been due to 2 things: the warmer weather and deeper cracking along the the main trunk. I believe both these factors gave the tree more "wiggle-room" and caused less direct rubbing.

This recording is a compilation of 27 interesting clips throughout the night ranging in length from 3-111 seconds.

anthéne & IKSRE - sunlight on the tundra

This lengthy single track, just under an hours and 45 minutes in duration, was compiled by Tobias Reber from the work of 54 participants in a summer 2022 collaboration between Musikfestival Bern and the Disquiet Junto music community. Contributors were invited to make drones based on a shared single chord from a John Cage composition. More details at disquiet.com/0554.

We don’t do a lot of this sort of thing (by which I mean a post-project compilation), in large part because I never want Junto participants to feel like they need to complete a piece before posting it, and in part because external overarching editorial consideration — as is necessary for a compilation like this — is also something I don’t want someone thinking about as they produce tracks for the Junto. But that said, the projects with Musikfestival Bern are unique ones, and part of the announced plan from the start was some tracks may be selected for playing during part of the festival. This excellent compilation is one expression of that plan. Many thanks to Tobias for having executed this compilation.

Orapendula In Ecuador (binaural/headphones)

This track features the haunting vocalizations of the Common Loon. The ambient "roar" you'll hear is the sound of gentle night breezes swishing through the treetops of large Red Pines nearby. (One critical listener calls this element "sublime.") Recorded late May, 2008. Skies were mostly clear; winds were light and variable; temp. was in the low 50s (F).

Midnight Loons - Wagner Lake

Recorded in the Makendawa reserve close the Kilani river in Sri Lanka. 

It is the dry season in late March. A storm which never quite brakes has the frogs in excitement. Many katydids call here and a Sri Lankan frogmouth can be heard. The siren like 'woo-wooing' from the marshey forest floor is a chorus of frogs I have been struggling to identify.

Borneo Rainforest - Dawn - Gibbons

Night gently transitioning to day in the misty World Heritage Listed Gondwana rainforest amongst ancient Antarctic Beeches. On this January morning the subdued dawn light of the cloudy mountain top meant that the night shift of insects, cicadas and frogs continued well after the day shift begins at first light. For most of the year Eastern Yellow Robin leads the chorus but it is silent or absent on this morning. The frog calling is the "Pouched", "Marsupial" or "Hip-Pocket" frog, Assa darlingtonii, named for the brood pouches on the males, where the tadpoles travel to after hatching. (Thanks Jeremy).White-throated treecreeper is first followed at 4:30 by Alberts Lyrebird calling a little tentatively out of breeding season. Other species in this recording include Lewins Honeyeater, Brown Cuckoo Dove, Satin Bowerbird, Yellow-throated Scrubwren, White-Browed Scrubwren, King Parrot, Crimson Rosella, Bassian Thrush, Grey Shrike-thrush, Grey Fantail, Green Catbird, and the Eastern Whipbirds are feeding in pairs with an adult and a juvenile together. 
The recording begins 5 minutes before first light and continues till five minutes after dawn. Altitude 1140m ASL. Sennheiser MKH8020 in Iso-Binaural Stereo, SD702.
