Dance Hall In The Dark (feat Kwame Write)

An excerpt from sound design for the theatre production "Sense of Place" by Weave Movement Theatre, at Dancehouse, Melbourne, 16-19 August 2023.

This short excerpt is from soundscape, voice mix and music towards the end of the show, as the performers onstage move and dance with an enormous piece of fabric, dancing to their own voices talking about the space they are in - the Dancehouse.

In the theatre, I had use of two speakers behind the audience and four speakers in front, as well as a sub woofer under the audience seats. The sounds you hear in this mix, which is a mix done with Dolby Atmos, gives some impression of the horizontal, spatial movement of the sounds, which increased in their sway and spiralling dynamic along with the performers.

A short excerpt of a section building an enhanced reflection of the birds  surrounding the pavilion structure, along with electronic reverberating sounds. Built entirely from individual source sounds.

||Reflections|| is an installation that discovers, highlights and enhances the rhythm and melody in everyday sounds, using the pavilion’s structure to reflect and focus these sounds, and weaving them into a musical chorus creating a synergistic, hyper-real experience of place and space.

This installation was constructed in stereo, played in a series of stereo pair speakers throughout the pavilion.

“Sonority I: magyar – Dancing on Blades” is a one hour installation featuring six storytellers simultaneously telling the same folktale of the Dancing Princesses, in six dialects of the Hungarian (magyar) language. The seventh storyteller is the sound design, created with field recordings of environment, dance, and music from Hungary along with effects and electronic music elements to enwrap audiences in the story world. An aural cinematic journey with a multi-layered spatial soundscape constructed of field recordings, music and dance gathered throughout Hungary and Transylvania.

Created in residence at the Spatial Sound Institute, Budapest, working with the 4DSOUND system – a large scale integrated hardware and software installation in a three storey, suspended warehouse studio, creating a fully omnidirectional sound environment.

This work was created in the space, for the space, over the three-month period of residency at the SSI. It was presented to the public in November 2018 as part of the Central European Society for Soundscape Ecology (CESSE) Conference and 4DSOUND ‘Inaudible Realities’ event.

The folktale type of the Dancing Princesses is very popular in Hungarian tradition. It is the story of a group of princesses (three, seven, or twelve, depending on the text) who sneak out of their palace every night and go into a magical realm to dance their shoes to shreds. They are not found out until a brave (male) hero secretly follows them on their nighttime journey. He discovers that they open a trapdoor in their room (or fly out the window, or otherwise sneak out, depending on the version) and pass through copper, silver, gold (sometimes diamond) forests, across a lake, and into a fabulous palace where they dance all night with princes/devils. He brings proof of his adventures to the king and in the end, he either marries one of the princesses or is otherwise rewarded, while the princesses are either married off or punished for their escapades.

Sonority I - Binaural Adaptation - Excerpts

A stereo mix of the sound work "Bizalom (The Weather Inside)" first created with the 4DSOUND system at Spatial Sound Institute, Budapest, then reworked for a live performance at Chimeres Space, Athens, then again for the Yamaha wave-field synthesis system at MPavilion, Melbourne. This version is a simple stereo mix created during the MPavilion rehearsal.

Bizalom was initially conceptualised with the 4DSOUND system at the Spatial Sound Institute in Budapest (2018), during a period of early experimentation with the system. I was in residence at the SSI creating SONORITY and began with experiments using field recordings I’d made of the ocean in Greece and Australia some time before, exploring the capability of the omnidirectional 4DSOUND studio to create a moving, sounding ocean beneath my feet.

I began to incorporate other sounds – captured audio moments in time from summers of travel, dynamic movements, fields of electronic pulse and swirling voices, building a sound meditation that I used as a practice of deep listening for myself and whomever came into the studio to listen. 

I enlisted the voices of other artists in residence, including Petko Ognyanov, Ana Amorós, Kate de Lorme, and Vladimir Razhev, speaking the word for trust in Hungarian, Greek, and English. Petko also reads the inscriptions from the Seikilos epitaph.

I’ve long been intrigued by the Seikilos epitaph, the oldest surviving complete musical notation; a timeless poetic message of love. I have a MIDI file of the tune, that triggered a whole other dimension to this work.

I began to write poetic story prompts on my daily walks during this time, first inspired by the word "trust", which I received as an answer to a question I took the month before to the Delphi oracle (along with a thunder storm). I let the sounds I'd gathered over years lead me down other paths of memory, moments in time, internal weather reports. 

The work developed organically and continues to develop, a meditation on the complex feelings and memories that sound and atmosphere triggers. It is a very personal work of response to weather, outside and inside.
