In ATL where I live, rainstorms have arrived for the next few days as Hurricane Erin has moved inland. Yet, even on the rainiest of days, the afterglow of music created around firelight lingers like the smoky scent of burnt hickory. In my world, that “firelight” is a computer screen, although in the past I’ve noodled an acoustic guitar around a campfire. Who hasn’t?! 😀

Latin for feeling – is a journey into the subtle in-between where sound transforms into emotion. Layers of ambient textures intertwine with driving arpeggios and a pulsing sub-bass, while space and depth merge into a hypnotic whole. It captures both closeness and distance, a state between dream and reality. Music to be felt – not just heard.

Then She Reaches for the Gun was formed in 2021 by Mat Ward. At its essence is sound collage, Ward invites musicians, sound artists, poets and anyone interested to send him files to be used, abused and showcased ‘as suggested by the work’. They are not always musical but field recordings, spoken word, engine noises and drunken rants. Animals participate a lot too! The raw material is arranged with one phrase asking for the next in an alchemical and intuitive process that will most often feature dozens of tracks weaving in and out of each other, colliding, harmonising, arguing and laughing along the way.

Both the aesthetic and the compositional methods use what Frank Zappa called Xenochrony - the mixing together of separately recorded and rhythmically opposing musical phrases to create polyrhythmic and polytempi compositions.The work also features fragmented story telling with the human voice (in many languages) appearing unannounced throughout the tracks offering up snippets of thoughts, conversations, jokes and existential angst. The absurdity of humanities desperate claim to have any real understanding of its place in the universe is revealed through the recorded follies and genuine emotions of the artists. The project is a celebration of chance, diversity and community. It pays homage to all musical tastes and genres whilst maintaining a sense of humour and irreverence that is needed to stay sane in the climate of 21st Century contemporary culture.

we got a temporary boss for a little while but she didn’t seem like she cared and was just there until someone else was hired
when they hired the present boss, he was supposed to be temporary as well
but he was a dick from the beginning
it felt like he thought he was superior to everyone even though he didn’t know shit about this job
and never worked in this field 
he frequently called people into his office and yelled at them while banging his fist on the table
we could all hear him outside of his closed door
a lot of us still liked our job and working with each other but things were no longer the
same 
the energy had changed 
there was no more transparency and communication 
and even though I am pretty sure he could tell everyone thought things had gotten worse for the company 
for some reason he decided he wanted to keep this job
and the board of directors let him permanently stay
probably because he had a plan to save the business more money which he probably did
cause positions were getting cut and no one was getting raise anymore 
the fuckers

man, we need to stand up and once again realize our collective power
cause they playing us all shady
convincing us to be content 
but we can’t go down like that 
hell no! 

so like I said my boss called me in
to his office like a sucker 
but i wasn’t giving in
asked what i thought about 
some of my coworkers 
wanted me to rank ‘em 
but i wasn’t taking orders 
asked if i thought that
