Sunrise with Herring Gulls - 15/7/2021 - Rayhat Reef

The Páramo mountain environment is a rather quiet place. Still, when you really listen closely, there are many interesting detailed sounds to be heard.

Páramo is a very important alpine tundra ecosystem, located only in the Andes mountains range between the treeline and glaciers (average altitude 3500 - 4000m). It is one of the rarest ecosystems on Earth. Colombia is one of only three countries in the world to be home to paramo and more than 60% of these moorlands are found here. The vegetation is composed mainly of giant rosette plants, shrubs and grasses. The most famous and important plant is the Frailejon. The Páramos are capturing water from low-hanging clouds and releasing it back into the soil, ensuring Colombian cities have a continuous water supply.

Dusk at the Mountain Lagoon - Páramos

During a severe wind storm, I revisited the yellow popular from this winter storm recording: https://soundcloud.com/acousticnature/tree-creaks-inside-an-oak

This time, I stuck a pair of EM272 microphones inside the tree cavity instead of putting my SASS in front of the opening. I mainly did this to protect the mics from the heavy rains that came during the night. 

I was really amazed at how well the tree insulated the mics from the outer world's sounds. Even the torrential downpour we received sounded like a gentle drizzle. 

When I popped the SD card into my computer the next morning, I was surprised that the popular made less noise than the previous recording, despite the increased wind speeds. 

I think this may have been due to 2 things: the warmer weather and deeper cracking along the the main trunk. I believe both these factors gave the tree more "wiggle-room" and caused less direct rubbing.

This recording is a compilation of 27 interesting clips throughout the night ranging in length from 3-111 seconds.

Tree Creaks Compilation | 50mph Gusts

A little flock of Whooper Swans, arrived a few days ago, one hour after sunset at Rengaskari Reef one mile from our home shore.  The sea is frozen a long way out, but by the shallow waters of the reef there's a small piece of free water.  The picture is by sunset as I leaved the mics on the reef.

The spring dawn chorus recorded in the heart of the Forêt des Cèdres du Luberon. This cedar forest is one of the most unusual of the forests and green spaces of the Luberon massif, given the oriental origin of these large trees. At an altitude of 727 metres, the cedar forest was originally planted with seeds from the Algerian Middle Atlas back in 1861. Due to it's altitude and distance from major towns and roads, the forest is very quiet and makes for a perfect recording location.

Julian Bohn is a German pianist and producer based in the Netherlands. He creates genre-crossing music for adventurous listeners longing for authenticity and acceptance. His music is carefully created and curated, like a soundtrack for your everyday life. 

Feels Like Home, his upcoming debut album, was crafted in collective solitude of the lockdown and still represents a celebration of collaboration, with an international line-up of 11 musicians from the United States, England, Germany and the Netherlands who recorded in their individual home studios.  The songs are brimming with warmth, while poignantly addressing some of the themes all of us were confronted with last year: loneliness, belonging and having a place to come home to, and fear in the face of a growing climate crisis. At times the music feels wide open, moments later becoming close and intimate, as if the musicians are playing in your living room. You always feel the curiosity and openness of a bandleader that rejects being bound by certain genre lines and prefers to channel his younger self for inspiration, trying to create music that gives him the same exhilarating feeling his music-hungry 17-year-old self got when first falling in love with the craft.
