Our next Mixed By comes from Toronto-based DJ, producer, and community organiser: Ciel. You might recognise the name Ciel via her Discwoman affiliation, or you might have read all about her on Resident Advisor’s Breaking Through. You might have listened to her record released on Shanti Celeste’s Peach Disc last year. You might have heard about her inclusivity and safer spaces work in Toronto through her projects Work In Progress and It’s Not U It’s Me. Or else, you might have simply just seen her name plastered on bills all across Europe and North America non-stop this summer. 

The mix she kindly recorded for us, self-titled “My House Is Prog House”, is an hour or so of pleasantly tuneful yet decisively hard-hitting rave music. It’s an elated flurry of uplifting trancey keys, feel-good euro-dance vocals, shuffley breaks and hard-house basslines, all sandwiched between a dramatically poignant climax at open and close. 

Listen to the mix whilst reading Ciel’s reflection on touring, promoting and producing over the past year… then dance, shed a singular tear doused in pure euphoria, and dance even harder.

There’s no stopping DJ Normal 4. While Tim Schumacher’s career was certainly rising towards a high ebb this summer, this comes to no surprise to those who have been following the  Mühlheim artist’s trajectory. A Salon des Amateurs family member, the man behind Aiwo Rec. has delivered a bewitching EP for Music from Memory sublabel Second Circle, proving that he is not only a master of breakbeat and rave, but also the keen commander of a very distinct 4th-World-meets-Industrial-German persuasion. Born somewhere in Yorkshire in the late 80s Bleep Techno was one of the first truly British sounding sub-genres of House and Techno. Typified by heavy dub-reggae inspired basslines, haunting choral vocals and samples that bleeped, clonked and clanged their way along, Bleep Techno has remained one of the more obscure strains of dance music. Bleep went on to inspire producers around the world (some of that can be found in this mix) and still sounds like the future despite its age.

This mix is dedicated to Rob Gordon and respect goes out to Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford.

A progressive and passionate producer and dj, Ciel joins our series in style, offering a carefully crafted 80 minute insight into Toronto's scene, her hometown. We'll leave it to her to explain in a little more detail below...

"My past year has taken me on some incredible trips to places I never dreamed I'd visit. But at the end of every jaunt I look forward to returning home to Toronto. For me personally, having roots in the city I cut my teeth in as a DJ is super important. On a bigger scale, it is paramount that I rep my city in my work as a DJ and producer and future label-owner. There is so much incredible music being made by folks in my city on cracked copies of Ableton or carefully-curated collections of gear acquired through exhausting 9-5 jobs. But compared to other scenes, we lack platforms and labels to showcase some of this work. Due to any number of reasons such as geography, lack of industry connections, and general ignorance about our scene, artists struggle to find a place to put their music out, and many often end up self-releasing rather than send demos out to European labels who ignore them. This mix is for them. It is my hope that through mine & others' efforts more DIY dance labels will sprout up in our city and that labels in other parts of the world will pay attention to my home."

For its 5th release, La Chinerie’s specialized rave imprint, Comic Sans Records, releases a 2 x LP featuring the work of NETSH.

The reason you might not have already heard of this artist is probably why you’ll want to listen to his music: behind this moniker is Thomas W. Jager, a 22 years old producer from Toulouse, France. 
In this compelling debut release, NETSH takes the listener on a one-way trip to his world with his own unique take on acid, braindance, electro, jungle and even a dash of hardcore. 
Frenzied breakbeats, thick and melodic 303 sequences, ass-shaking drum programming along with deep and lush pads are the constant on this record, coherent and diverse a the same time, which tells a lot about the young producer’s musical maturity.

It's one of those records where it's almost impossible to listen to just one track, it's more likely you'll find yourself listening to the whole thing. 
In case you had any doubts, this record proves that rave music will never die as long as there are young producers like NETSH who approach it with fresh ears and a forward-thinking attitude. Look out for this producer, something tells us you’ll be hearing more from him in the future.
