Been working in an odd tuning again (EbADF#ADb), and been meaning to record one of my ideas properly for people to hear... Let me know if there are issues with bass, as it could be my headphones being rubbish and they can't handle it... Hope some people like it, as usual I seem to have better versions when I'm sat in the kitchen without a microphone.. But hey!

Recorded with a Zoom H1 mic and played on my Guild D55.

Although he spent a number of years traversing various astral planes with Tarentel and the Drift, Danny Paul Grody also records his own brand of vibrantly melancholic music for guitar and synthesizer. Having already issued a number of captivating and alluring recordings with Three Lobed, Root Strata, and Students of Decay, Grody now joins Geographic North's ongoing 'Sketch for Winter' series for a modest excursion to aurally catalog icy, western terrains.

Equipped with Cormac McCarthy's sense of brutally beautiful western naturalism and at times resembling Loren Connors translating a frostbitten, desertous sunrise through an electric guitar, Grody weaves frostbitten sounds for the American West.

The opening, eponymous track drifts into frame like a polar wind, charring the landscape before it with consuming frost and distant but legitimate hopefulness. "On Leaving" sees the clouds break for a moment of inner and outer meditation, accounting for the highs of lows of past, present, and future. The meandering optimism of "For Western Skies" is delivered with ambulatory glee, as Grody permeates space with illuminated and paced transcendence.

"Mineral Springs" opens the B-side in a wide-eyed state of bucolic rusticism, surveying the elusive but apparent sense of life and loss in this natural setting. "Only" hosts a brief and solitary contemplation on one’s self and surroundings, retreating into a deeply introspective haze of comfortable isolation. Closer "Cloudhand" resembles an aural yarn of some lonesome cartographer in an unknown place, accompanied only by a set of mapmaking tools and the barest essentials of survival.

'Other States' speaks to the heart of our appreciation of the emotion scope of the season. This is Sketch for Winter VI.

Over the course of the twelve songs that make up 'New Words for Old Wounds', the latest release from William Ryan Fritch, the listener is given both a scintillating reminder of the immersive, unmistakable sound worlds he created over the last two years and a welcome introduction to an expanded sonic palette and refined craft that points to where his music may go next.

This parting gift to those that supported his ambitious eleven album subscription series, The Leave Me Sessions merges the colorful orchestration and high drama bombast of 'Heavy' and 'Emptied Animal', the sweeping soundscapes of his finest works for film, and the restrained, nuanced textures of 'Empty' to create its own distinct identity that is both haunting and infectiously exuberant. With guest vocal appearances by DM Stith, Powerdove, and Ceschi, New Words furthers the collaborative spirit found on 'Revisionist' and seamlessly laces each of the artists unique talents into his compositions.

Originally, 'New Words for Old Wounds' was slated to release as a strictly digital affair, but as the album took shape it seemed a more grandiose approach was in order. Lost Tribe Sound label owner Ryan Keane has helped design and handcraft a number of deluxe editions over the years, sparing no expense to work with the finest archival quality papers, cloth, and materials used in the professional bookmaking process.

'New Words for Old Wounds' will be released in two different deluxe CD editions. The first is part of a new series from the label called "The Private Reserve", which will bring to life highly limited and incredibly lavish handcrafted editions. The Private Reserve editions will be limited to twenty-five copies for the world, and housed in a Japanese side stitched hard cover book, containing four bound pages of lyrics and artwork. The second edition will be no less stunning, as LTS has enlisted the help of the packaging and printing press experts at Stumptown Printers in Oregon, to help create a panoramic gatefold housing for the album and lyrics sheet (limited to 250).

Both editions prominently feature the unbelievably realistic pen and ink paintings of artist Sail (uselessarm.com). One would think they are looking at a black and white photograph or some sort of photoshop manipulation when viewing Sail’s work, but that would be incorrect. Between the bold musical forms, rich imagery, and the tactile, substantial packaging, 'New Words for Old Wounds' is truly a fitting close to Fritch’s masterful series.

Played on a capoed 12-string, this was kind of inspired by the spirit of an epic journey. My wife and I took a road trip out West in our old Saturn the first year we were dating and really had an unforgettable and amazing two weeks together, journeying through mainly Montana and Washington. The start of that journey was on Highway 94...

Here's a little weekend present for those interested.
A little something on a strangely tuned guitar (FCD#GA#D). I added some supportive arpeggios here and there.

I think it has a sweet and light melancholic tone and I really like the sound of my acoustic. I realize an expensive mic would present that sound even better.

Feel free to work on it if it ignites something in you whether you want to glitchify it, build a drone around it, add vocals, timestrech it to last an hour, steal samples or whatever. I would love to hear the result.
